My favorite is Destinator but it is also very expensive, Deluo Routis seems to be a winner, it has most of what Destinator does although maybe not quite as pretty but it's a quarter of the price and you get the Windows and PocketPC versions, all for $85. I just bought Routis and have been pleased.

k think ima get Routis for now then try Destinator or Topo 5.0 when it comes out. see the thing is I want something that has a great graphical, if thats a word, interface to it. Like if I wanted one that looked like a paper map Id just use that. I think I will just try as many as possible and the ones I dont decide to use I will sell here.

Thanks

J

I have Delorme Street Atlas, MS Mappoint, and MS streets and Trips. I want destinator, but after spending the $$ on those, Id rather use what I have then fork out another lump sum of $$ for Destinator.

how much for Street Atlas or all of them? Think id prob like Street Atlas better than the MS's. Just need one to hold me over till I can get one of the others. Why does every one like destinator so much. I think Topo looks nice... ?

Seems Destinator was the first with the "3D View" which is really nice, it isn't really a topo map but it is easy to follow. With Destinator 2 the maps are individual, roughly by state, so address to address routing over more than one map is a pain. You can do it but you use the major roads map then re-route to a minor location once you are closer. This is suppsoed to have been changed in D3.

Routis has a lot of what Destinator has, nice 3D views, not quite as slick visualy Destinator but still very nice. One feature that appeals to me which I have not tried yet is that you can avoid the next section of your route. Theoretically if you hit bad traffic you can tell it to avoid the next leg and it'll reroute around it.

Streets & Trips / MapPoint have great maps but poor GPS support. They will show you where you are on the map but do not do routing, you'd have to keep an eye on the map to follow the displayed route as best you can. No 3D view, no rerouting, no voice directions. Some of this can be achieved in MapPoint with a shareware add-on called AGPS but it's still a little clunky in my opinion.

I have not used recent versions of the other apps, a lot of people seem to like CoPilot, there are also a lot of reviews around if you search on Google. On the Deluo web site www.deluo.com there is a 50 screenshot demo of Routis - it's the PocketPC version but it looks pretty much the same.

Chris.

I have tried E MAp. It came with my GPS mouse. I just got Routis yesterday and this is the mouse I am using:
http://store.yahoo.com/directron/gmouse.html
It looks identical to the deluo. I have been pretty pleased with the combination. Just a quick question. It would appear there is a lag between where I am and where it shows I am. Is this hardware(mouse or computer) or software related? I have the baud rate set at 4800 for the mouse but Routis has settings all the way up to 115200. Would that make a difference?

it all depends on the gps unit really. If you have it up that far it still might only send an update every 2 seconds. On a side note i got routing working with mappoint.. it'll be included with ME.. hopefully soon.. but who knows.

I didn't like streets and atlas.. i thought it was awful. I was going north and it had be going east through a forest and it took 10 minutes to get in my current location again.

I see Topo 5.0 is out, anyone play with it? My nav unit is in my 4x4 expedition, and it really sounds cool to be able to route over unpaved land. I have a *****in "secrets of california" 4x4 book that gives coordinates, it would be nice to be able to plug them into a app that understands 4x4'n and a little more than just flat paved roads. Anyone have any xperience with such a package or this one?

Thanks
SD

I'd have to weigh in that Street Atlas 2004 is the worst routing software I've used so far... MapPoint with AGPS is a little better but not really that great. I trust Routis to get me there and back again, and the next version (v2) that just came out looks to be even better (prettier too).

Regarding 4x4'ing, that does sound pretty cool. I wonder what heavy tree cover would do to signal lock though...

Care to scan anything near SF?

Topo5 is completely unusable in the car. The buttons are way too small. Also, the M10000 isnt fast enough, you will find that you are constantly waiting for it to redraw the maps. It runs better on my dual 3.2Ghz CPU desktop though. Even on that thge map redraw is annoying...
