Plastic cars are transparent for GPS
I'm in the process of getting the components together for my carputer. I was wondering how to mount the GPS when I realized the body panels on the car are plastic. I simply velcrod my eathmate inside a horizontal panel and it sees the gps birds right through the body of the car. Cool!

Yep.
Metal and concrete are the only things that really block the signal greatly (well, enough so that you don't get a decent fix)

The only corvettes out there with platic body panels are going to be 1/24 scale and sold by a company like matel and will require painting, glue, and assembly. Someone can correct me if im wrong, but dont all corvettes have fiberglass bodys?

The C5s are close enough to tupperware . . . . it's less fiberglass than plastic depending on the panel that you're talking about.
pip -- Where'd you end up doing the install in your C5 -- I'd be interested in comparing vs what I stuck in my Z06.

The carputer is actually still on the bench
However I'm planning to put the carputer in the center trunk storage compartment. Theres plenty of room in there for the computer, USB doodads and room left over for some amps when I replace the bose with 5.1 surround sound
I'm planning on replacing the lid of that compartment with a clear panel with led fans and one of those funky electro static blue lights.
The cable for the gps puck runs behind the back panels to the horizontal surface under the body panel to the side of the trunk lid. Its velcro'd in place there.

If I might make a recommendation
There's a proverbial crapload of space under the passenger side of the dash for USB gadgets and the like. Similarly, since the accessory power connector is right in the passenger footwell, it's a piece of cake to fab a new passenger-side footwell panel, and stick everything up front -- you do need to build up the footwell panel by about 1" - 1 1/2", but I've found that most people don't even notice. It beats having to worry about the heat in that center pocket, and still keeps a significant amount of space available for subs [unless you fab into the side pockets] and general storage.
GPS receiver then can either go in the dash behind the center AC vents, on the side next to the passenger a-pillar, or on top of the tunnel.
