New GPS Mouse and Routis

Hey y'all,

I just got a GPS mouse from ebay. The ebay special. I've plugged it into my laptop and took it for a spin and sure enough, I can see my co-ordinates, speed and heading. But I have a few questions/problems with Routis.

Now, I think it should be said that I'm currently in Germany and I know Routis is for the US. I going back to the states in a month and that's where it will be used.

With that being said, here's my problem and a question. First, I tried other GPS dashboard programs to make sure the GPS mouse is working including the small application that comes with the GPS mouse. All seems to work just fine. But as soon as I tried to start up Routis, it locked. Is this simply because I'm on the wrong continent or is there perhaps a problem with Routis and mouse getting along? I think it's just because I'm not in the states, but I wanted to know if anyone else has had problems with Routis and this mouse.

Second is my question. I've noticed that with the GPS test program it shows my heading but when I stop the heading jumps all over the place and even shows me pointing in the opposite direction. Once I get moving again, no problems. Does Routis 'ignore' this false heading or complain that you need to turn around?

Thanks.

This is more than likely a problem with Routis not getting along with your usb-serial driver software. (I'm assuming your gps mouse is usb.) Since the other apps you tried work, your gps is OK. Make sure you are running with the same port settings for both the mouse and for Routis.

There have been similar problems with the Earthmate gps. Read about it here.

If all else fails, think about getting GPSGate.

Some gps software will only calculate your heading when you're moving. When stopped, your heading will fluctuate. Routis doesn't care about the heading, only that you are past your waypoint, before it will tell you to turn around.

Thanks for the help,

I think you are right. I did a little more investigating. At first, I was having the problems on my laptop so I tried my desktop (car pc is in the house and won't reach the window yet). I plugged my GPS mouse into my desktop and had just enough cord to reach out the window. I managed to get 4 sats to lock on and when it did, Routis responded with (Out of map range) and *OFF ROAD*. I had the sat viewer up and it was indeed working properly. So, it must be an issue with my laptop. I'll give it a try with the car pc when I can.

Thanks again.

Thumbs up

Not meaning to answer my own question, but I've done more investigating. I hooked up my car pc to the GPS mouse for the first time and stuck the mouse on the balcony. Sure enough I got 4 sats and Routis said that I need to "Proceed to the nearest road". So as long as it's working with the car pc, I'm really happy.

I think this is a problem with Routis and my Vaio which may be a little underpowered for what I'm asking. Or something just doesn't agree. Routis stops responding when the GPS gets a lock. So, no worries. I'm good to go. Headin' for the install.
