I was previously using Destinator 2 for my Car PC and I was very unhappy with it. The voice commands are very buggy and worthless and there's no way to turn them off. Also, the 3d mode had no street names. What a worthless feature. And the complaint list goes on and on.
IGuidance, I just installed last night. OMG that was no fun at all. If you don't have a CD-ROM drive attached to your Car PC, which I don't, you're in for a lot of fun.
Tried installing it over the network by sharing out my home PC CD-ROM Drive. The software itself installs fine but then the map loader won't work because it expects you to be loading it from a local CD Drive. It won't even look anywhere but on local drives.
So then I copied the CD's over onto an external USB hard drive and tried installing from there. That doesn't work either because it only looks in the ROOT directory for the disks it is looking for. Who wrote this crap?
So finally, I copied the CD's into the ROOT directory on my external hard drive and got it to install after about an hour of troubleshooting.
Whew...<whipes brow>.
So after finally getting it installed, I must say it is a dream come true. At less than half the price of Destinator 2, it is very easily 3 times the software product.
The voice instructions for IGuidance are flawless. It lowers the music volume to give voice commands, and it uses complete phrases like, "In three-quarters of a mile, keep to the right and follow the signs for 580 east freeway."
The 3D mode actually has street names. I love the color-coding of the streets, off-ramps and highways. Unlike Destinator, it actually shows you highways and which direction on the highway you should be travelling (East/West).
And I LOVE how it zooms in really close as you approach a turn so you can see exactly where it is, and gives you a distance bar on the right (similar to a file-upload progress bar) so you can see how close the turn is. It then zooms you back out after your turn is completed. Very very slick. And makes following the directions a breeze.
I LOVE the fact that it tells you what address range you are on while you are driving down the street. So if you're on Main Street, it will show your location on the bottom as, "Main Steet (1200 - 1400). Also very slick.
It also seems to update your location a heck of a lot faster than Destinator 2 does and it makes all the difference. It shows me EXACTLY where I am and seems to be pretty much dead on. When going through tunnels it locks a LOT faster than Destinator did when coming out of the tunnel. Seems like the very instant your car can see the sky.
I could go on and on about how great this software is and how happy I am with it... but I'll stop here.
Conclusion: Go IGuidance 2.0 and you will not be dissapointed, as I was with Destinator.
Now it's true they have made a lot of changes with Destinator 3, but unfortunately you can't get it for the PC. And just using Destinator 3 maps is NOT going to get you anywhere close to IGuidance 2.0.
Sorry for such a long post, but I'm really excited.
