Navigator Turn by Turn V2

Hi all, Down here in Australia, there's not a great deal of mapping stuff going on, as the only decent mapping stuff seems to be US based. Great for you guys, very sucky for us.

One that is pretty good from what I've found is Navigator turn by turn by Opsrey Software. The one major problem I have with it however, is that it asks too much from a Via Mini ITX 533Mhz PC... Maps are very detailed (Melways maps!) and the routing seems to be ok (not the worlds best, but it will get you there)...

Anyone else played with this software? What specs did you use?

it's interesting, I've updated the hardware used in the car to a celeron 2.4Ghz, with 512Mb DDR400 in dual channel mode - and the software *still* lags...

Anyone got any ideas? It sits there with 100% CPU usage, and can be anywhere from 600m to 1km behind your current location

GPS data rate?
GPS accuracy?
Background applications?
I don't know the software, but is it graphically intensive?

The software is available from:
http://www.ospreycomputing.com.au/

It's not what I would say graphically intensive... and it's definaly the navigator.exe that's munching 100% cpu resouces...

I know it's not a GPS accuracy issue, as if I drive along, then stop the car and wait, it will catch up...take off again, and it will still be lagged, but it will eventually start going again... on a 7.7km trip, it was lagged by ~700m when I arrived. That's pretty bad to say it's on a 2.4Ghz CPU!

oh, the GPS is in NMEA mode, and is at 4800baud. I usually use the GPS with Comfoolery, but I've even exited that and given the physical com port to the program with no difference

I tried it on my PII 500MHz Laptop with 128MB memory (pretty much the minimum specs), and it was laughable... 4 minutes to start up and zoom to the current location. About 3 minutes of 100% load just to calculate a route between 2 inputted locations (only to find out that it took me from a place about 500m from my current location, to a place which was on the WRONG side of the Motorway to my intended destination).

To me the start and end points are the most important part of the directions. If it cant get the last details right i might as well use MapTraxx or some other moving-map display!
