RS232 with NMEA 0183, RTCM 104 DGPS data format and proprietary Garmin data formats

Should be good to go...

yes, my grandad has this and you can buy the computer cable for it. I think you can put newer maps on it too, and add more memory to hold more detailed maps.

It doesn't have WAAS tho.

Sorry, I should have elaborated on my post...

RS232 with NMEA can be read as "NMEA protocol via the serial port". Most mapping software these days uses the NMEA protocol as the standard... I may be completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how it is...

I see no reason why it will not work. I have an older GPS 12 from garmin that works. If it supports the NMEA protocol you will be able to use it.
Do you have the unit yet??

Ok, when you get it you might need to configure it to use the NMEA protocol. If it doesn't have WASS its not a big deal, its just not as accurate, its still pretty good tho. My granddad's is a great reciever, maps are very in depth since he added the new memory.
Just think before you spend the money on it, do you really need a handheld GPS? is it worth the money for how many times your going to use it? and do you have space for it. I don't like sitting my hand held GPS on the dash because it moves around. Im going to get a holder for it one day, but the ones I see are ugly and bulky, so until i find one I like its going to keep sliding around. One bad thing about handhelds is that they are more theft suceptable because people know what they are, where as if you went with the GPS mouse, you could hide it.

How much are you going to pay for it?

Get a USB GPS Mouse on Ebay for $75. You don't need the display for your carputer (only if you're using it outside your car).

That is a nice handheld reciever tho. If you do alot of bike riding, hiking, camping etc etc it is nice to have. You can also take it when you go on other trips without your carpc. Its up to you which you want tho :-P for $125 that is a nice price too!

Well, for a standalone GPS receiver that is a good price.
But if you already have a Pocket PC - get one of those CF BC-307 receivers.
However, you will have to buy software for your Pocket PC, this one has software built in.
