Will Delorme USB GPS work with Copilot7?

Hey All,
I currently have a delorme USB GPS receiver with Copilot 7 software. Copilot is having trouble recognizing my Delorme Earthmate GPS receiver. Is there any way for this to work?

I also have a copilot USB receiver and when i plug that in, it works right away. It appears to have a usb-to-serial hardware converter built inside because it is recognized by my device manager as being "Prolific Usb-to-serial COM Port".

Is there any way for me to make my delorme into a COM port without sacrificing USB connectivity?

You need to use the COM Port Emulation Drivers for the USB Earthmate. get them here: http://www.delorme.com/support/gps/uemate005.asp

I used my USB Earthmate for a month with Copilot 7 (until my Copilot eval serial number expired!) and it worked great. The only thing I don't like about the Earthmate is that bright yellow "come steal me" color - a little distracting on the dash.

Big Zack,

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help!

I love this forum...so much help and assistance and everyone is so eager to help each other. How wonderful.

Yeah, the yellow color is too crazy for me too. I was thinking about spraypainting it black or making a sleeve for it, not too sure yet.

Thanks again BZ!

you could also rubber-ize it instead of spraypainting it.
I've done that and its waterproof now.

Whoa. I'm going try that. How much did the rubber compound cost you?

Or you could do a stealth install. Mine is taped to the underbelly of my rear speaker grill. 95% of the time I'm getting green hits. my issue now is software. Streets and Trips has some sucky maps.

I have Copilot7/live and the Earthmate USB GPS. I have installed the DeLorme serial drivers and rebooted. However Copilot refuses to find the GPS.

Looking in the Control Panel under COM ports I could see the earthmate listed as COM3. Why cant Copilot find it? I thought this version was supposed to be compatible?

Are there specific COM port settings required?

speed should be set at 4800. I have installed the DeLorme serial drivers on three laptops and it always shows up as COM 6... do you already have something on 6? Not sure if it matters or not, just a thought.

I got it working thanks. I just needed to adjust settings within Copilot.

When I used the Earthmate without the drivers to set it to a COM port it would lock on instantly to several satellites. Now it can take 20-30 seconds to lock on. I wonder why?

It is probably taking longer because of the flux capacitor. In conjunction with a magnetic field and the load, the flux capacitor uses the hierarchical structure of the cosmos as a timer. The trilamination of the tiny spheres with selected metals and their subjection to a magnetic field and current (sustained by the load) destabilizes the orderliness of the proton, the heavier atom and the "tissue" of individual layers of metal. The matter then seeks to re-establish itself in the "fractal set."

The trilamination inserts a "curve" where there ought to be none, between the atomic structure and the next higher context of presence which is normally occupied by living things, beneath the solar niche and within the biospheric niche in a five to eleven dimensional collapsible schema of the universe accounting for all the phenomenon observed by scientists and others.

... or it could be something else.

Now I've noticed that the Earthmate serial driver prevents my system going into standby. I may just bite the bullet and but a different GPS puck.
