All the answers you seek are here my friend, but to help you on your way, Yes a DC DC power supply is far better than An inverter as most will tell you, OPUS Solutions do some great DCDC psu's So does Carnetix, and Maestro, as for gps reciever Try Ebay there cheap and work well many people have posted here about GPS Recievers they have found on ebay!
