Mappoint 2004

I got my hands on an unopened copy of Mappoint 2004. I already have a Nav app for my carputer. Is it worth it if I try to sell this? I'm trying to get a feel for how much I can get. Anyone know the going rate for this software? I heard somewhere is was close to $300 but I find that hard to believe (although I guess I scored if it is...)

Sell it? Open it?

I'd say sell it. You can get arount $150 - 200 on ebay for it, I don't think anyone is going to pay $300.

why mappoint blows for incar nav
- by default it updates every 15 seconds
- no map rotation
- no turn by turn directions (no easy way to get them either if you use it in a frontend)
- takes up too much damn room on install (no big surprise since it is a MS product)

1. Thanks for helping in the question I asked... O wait, you didn't.

2. Thanks for the thread "hi" - jack.

3. Thanks for the 5 insigtfull words that help in no manner shape or form.

Why did you even bother clicking?

...guess I missed the part where I wrote "hey everyone, I have Mappoint 2004 that you have to buy from me and must put in your car because it is the best "in-car" nav program available." I missed it cause I never said it.

Also, go to any gps form (I like gpspassion) and they will tell you that MS provides the comprehensive mapping solution out there. After installing NAV plugins such as AGPS you will have a very decent IN CAR nav solution. Like I said, I am already used to my NAV and don't want to give up map rotation for the other benefits Mappoint provides as I don't need them.

- AGPS removes the 15 sec refresh limitation
- Why I am not keeping it
- AGPS gives turn by turn and a WHOLE LOT more
- Too much room on install because the maps actually have decent coverage. Points of interest, census information, and all kinds of information that other products simply do not have. I wouldn't knock MS for producing a product that is packed with so much more info than the competition.

The AGPS $10 plugin turns a product that is better in all respects as a trip planner into a damn good in car nav solution. The only thing 2004 doesn't have is rotating maps, a feature I am looking for in the next version.

Sure I am not keeping it and that says something but I wasn't trying to sell it to anyone here either. The next time you hijack a thread, take a second to see if you are (a) providing any help on the topic of the thread and (b) actually provide an inciteful post that takes more than 30 secs to write.

Lightbulb

For $25.00 or so, you can buy Microsoft "Streets & Trips", which is pretty much the same as MapPoint (except for the capability of working with custom plug-ins and other advanced data analysis stuffs).

MS Streets & Trips 2005, just released a few weeks ago, has been re-designed for in-car navigation unlike previous versions. However, there's still no voice prompt yet, but $25.00 USD is a good bargain for such a fine piece of software. This version has map rotation, auto-reroute & more expanded GPS support. There're still some bugs to be fixed, but this version is much improved from previous ones.

Those interested can check out more details here (before I begin to sound like a MS saleman!):

http://www.microsoft.com/streets/default.mspx

It's speculated that MS will release MapPoint every 2 years, so while waiting for MapPoint 2006 (expected to be released next year), this is it.

And finally, yes, I personally think you can safely sell your MapPoint 2004 on eBay (don't open it) within the next 6 months. The final bid will tell you what it should worth.

Why would you open it if you hadn't considered using it?

Hijinks21 has helped you, considering you posted this in the GPS technical forum and not the CLASSIFIED forum. If all you are looking for is a going rate for MapPoint 2004, why not try SEARCHING somewhere that sells MapPoint?

Hell, even a search here will bring up quite a few threads providing some insightful knowledge of this product.

Oh yeah, try helping yourself first before criticizing respected members of this forum (that have offered pages of help) for giving your their $0.02.

Price

Not sure where you got the price (I would like to know, I'll buy it now for $25). The Microsoft site is selling Streets & Trips for: $39.95, but it is $129.00 for the GPS version.
