what to look for in a GPS receiver?

Hey guys,

After many months of planning and saving for my carputer I am finally ready to start buy everyting I need/want. Since I am going on a road trip in a few weeks I decided to buy the GPS receiver and software first so I can use it on my laptop. My question is what specs are most important when shopping for a reciever. I know this might be a personal preference issue, but I wanted to get some feed back from the board. BTW, I plan on using routis 2004, and here is a receiver on ebay that I am considering getting. Does anyone see anything wrong with this receiver?

Thank you for any imput you can give me.

you want it to be NMEA compatible and...i guess you might want to get one that is WAAS enabled. that makes it a little more accurate. im having really good luck with the rikaline 6010 unit.

It looks good to me, but someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you want WAAS support?

And is that the fastest aquisition times they have yet? Thats what I would be looking for. Fast aquisition times. It takes forever for mine to give a solid lock. Don;t get me wrong it looks like good reciever.

Anybody else?

hey fantamos, kiltjim - thanks for the quick replys. So WAAS is an important feature. Thats good to know. I think I will probably go with this one then. It's only a few bucks more.

Although, in the description it list mapping software it is compatable with and if doesnt list Routis 04, should this be of concern or do you just they left it off.

Thanks again.

Just so you know, I believe the Earthmate USB GPS receiver does NOT support NMEA. I'd stay away from that one, but if you want - I have one to sell you. LoL
