On/Off switch to USB

I am using a GPS that is connected by USB, problem is when booting computer and it is connected, it immeaditly tries to lock on to sats, making my mouse going haywire, and making it impossible to do anything, so I need something simple to shut it of, so questions is, is it possible to modify a USB cable witj a small on/off switch without burning ports on the mainboard, are working on a entire new dash for my Firebird 1994 embedding the GPS antenna and reciever for the wireless keyboard, might even embed the bluetooth antenna if I find it usefull

Why not just disable your gps receiver under control panel/mouse? Windows thinks your gps receiver is a mouse.

The problem is booting up, the mousepointer is running wild, when I am booted up there isn't a problem, so in order to boot up and get in touch with the system I need to disable the GPSantenna while booting, if I am going to disable it I need to do that every time I shut down, don't think that is a valid solution - correct me if I am wrong

I assumed that what samc meant to say was: if you go to to your device manager then 'Mice and other pointing devices' (this is on Win2k), you would find a device named 'Serial Mouse'. Disable this device (make a red x over it by right clicking and disabling). This action will not disable the gps.

I also assumed that you, whitewolf, was using Windows operating system.

Actually the guy stated he has a gps receiver and that is fine, boot up with your pointer device (ts, mouse) and usb gps plugged in. Your mouse pointer will jump all over the place so unplug it when windows has started. Then goto mouse properties and disable that mouse device.

I have no idea about disabling the mouse (which may be the superior solution, I don't know), but to addresss the initial question: It should be perfectly possible to place a switch in line on the USB cable. Throwing the switch would then be just like (un)plugging the cable from the port.

Switching the power line on the USB is probably enough, though if you wanted to be safe you might want to switch all of the lines.

Ha you know I watch that movie everytime it's on cable.
Unplug it after windows has booted up so that the mouse will stop jumping around yet it should be visible within your mouse devices (properties).

Plug it in to a powered hub, switch the hub on and off as needed?

The Deluo web site has various fixes for this, it's a common issue. You can also use the NOSERIALMOUSE boot option in Windows or fiddle the registry. You're better having it connected so it starts acquiring, the issue you want to fix is windows recognizing it incorrectly.

He is right... I had this same problem and used a fix from deluo's website. Forget about the hub and the switch and whatnot. do it the right way

I agree i had the same problem Go here www.deluo.com for technical help and downloads, jumping mouse fix,but make sure you never unplug the usb off else it will redetect it and you will have to put the fix in again.

I saw an unpowered 4 way usb switch today. That would do the trick.

Thanx, I will try the patch - and to answer the rest - Yes am using a Win system, have different users due to nature of system, so am using the mouse to indicate what user that is using car or if it is plugged into my main network at home.

I don't se the point in disabling the mouse in the devicemanager, am using a trackball as mouse and if disabling the mouse in devicemanager I will loose that - not using a GPS-Mouse but a seperate system to the GPS.

But thanx for the patch, am sure this will solve the problem, at the moment GPS antenna and system is placed in the back, but in the future a brand new dash with the reciever for keyboard with trackball included, GPS and Bluetooth will be embedded in the dash.
