GPS reciever

HI I am off to Spain / wherever, somewhere warm for the winter in the next week or so. I want a GPS receiver to permantly mount on/through the roof of my Motor home - RV size isn’t an issue within reason! I have read something about Traffic info and would possibly like a receiver that dose that, but not important. Can any one recommend one I am using Media car, D3. The port can be serial, parallel or USB. I fancy one of the ones that look like a "mushroom". Any ideas Folks Thanks

Steve

I use Holux 210.. Very good reciver. I don't know if it kan get traffic info becouse I never thought about that, but as a GPS it is a good reciver and some of my frinds with carputer has it too. It works fine with mappoint & D3. it is USB but you can get it on serial.

I use a Garmin GPS 25 engine with a seperate amplified antenna on the roof, it has a serial connection which keeps things very simple, which is handy for old men like us. Some of these new-fangled USB devices seem to pop up in the forums frequently with problems returning from hibernation etc, although the SIRF and TMC features sound interesting...

Cheers I will have a look at both of them.MP were did you get yours from serial seems to be good THE OLD WAYS ARE THE BEST!! I have a week or so to get one in and working, all being well. My usb mouse works fine just want something more permanant, looking into GPS tracking at moment so my boys know where I am and in case I loose motorhome, lost a landi in Moroco a few years ago with all papers and money, so at least this time I may get it back.

Hi Steve,

I use the Garmin amplified antenna (can't remember the name) you should find them all over..

I get an almost instant fix and rarely lose signal even in built up areas

PS Jealous about the winter sun thing!

That was a good find!

I have the GPS25 LVS which requires 5v, the one Grunge found is able to take a high voltage input, up to 30v if I remember correctly and internally regulate it, so dead easy to connect.

I found with the version that i have, if I connected it to the PC's 5v line so that it came on with the computer, the (PS2) mouse would go haywire. My solution to this was to build a delay circuit that does not apply power to the GPS until the PC has booted, but I believe i may have seen a software solution to this on the forum recently.

I use a Garmin powered antenna mounted on a bracket under my rear sunroof so it has a 360 deg view of the sky and while 'instant' might be a bit optimistic, it does give at least 3 satellites in 5-10 secs. I get to play with quite a few GPS devices with my job and I have not come across one that gives a faster lock. While the PC is in Pieces I have had an old Garmin StreetPilot on my dash, and it's quite frustrating seeing it slowly find one, then another satellite.

I would recommend these to anyone, or even better, the latest version the GPS15 which has WAAS and EGNOS support, even though for both of them you do need to mess with soldering up loads of little wires (but we love that don't we)

Steve

(not the old one)

I am going to put the engine in the case of the pc there is loads of room in there, and pick up a 12v power, cd drive line I think? and put a antenna socket on the back of the case so I can un plug every thing and take the pc in the house (to keep warm) more than safe. condensation is a killer

Maybe you could reverse engeneer the Valentine 1 radar detector. It has this remote module which uses normal phone wire to communicate. If you intercept that signal with a modem then maybe you can get something
