GPS Trip logger?!?
Does anyone know of a program that will work like the odometer in a car, ie. give you trip distance, daily distance, and total distance since reset?
I'm not interested in having the actual route routes logged, just distances.
Maybe it could be a background program that would create a CSV file and add a new line for each day, with distance travelled, ave speeds etc...
Surely something could be thrown together by some of our Monkeys?

Yeah, this is possible. Depending on how popular it would be I might whip something up

Why not get a DeLorme Bluelogger like me? The GPS device itself will log everywhere you go and how many miles you travel. Just access it with your computer whenever you want a pull the log files. I love it. It's only $150 too.

I would be very interested in something like this. Especially one which will log the Longitute and Latitude coordinates. Uses?
If program doesnt recieve password within alotted amount of time the program will start to collect data in some compressed format which could be read with a popular GPS program. Since password wasnt entered within the time frame, the computer will go into "my **** got jacked mode". This mode would then use the wifi usb adapter to connect to wifi hotspots which may come up enroute. Everytime the program gets a valid connection it will upload the file to a webpage, an email address, or a server.
I think a program which could do this would be an indispensable car security feature for the carputer community.

What is the purpose of the program? Simply to keep track of distance traveled and average speed or more than that?
For example, if you're using it for a lengthy trip, you could tell it how long you want it to take for you to get there and it would give you information on whether you were ahead of schedule, behind, etc. It could then tell you things like "go either 60mph for 10 minutes or 65mph for 7 minutes or 70 for 4 minute to get back on schedule".
As part of that function it would record the speed and distance, etc. Your initial suggestion indicated a basic trip recording requirement. My amplification suggested some kind of driving management advice coming from the system.

krystar-
cell phone network is too much money. I actually thought of cloning my phone, but im not sure how well that would work. Plus if i cloned my phone i have no idea how to make a program which will turn it on and have it connect to the internet automatically. Does anyone have any experience with that? Maybe someone can add a feature like this to the PhoneControl software.

Once you connect a phone to your PC via serial/bluetooth it becomes like a regular modem. AT commands for dialling, etc. Plus you have a few extra commands to get/send SMS messages. I actually have a GSM Modem which i plan to add to my carPC. Should do nicely (can get some cheap plans these days)

That's something that looks like what I'm asking about in this thread:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/newbie/36086-software-making-lists-car-usage.html
Basicly what I'm looking for is a logger that lets me list the trips done for a certain time. The ideal software would start logging each route, starting & ending point and the distance & time for the trip.
It would be super if I could enter a name for each location so I'd ask me if I was going to a known place or a new one. It would aslo be great if you cold lable the trip corporate or private travel.
I'll have a 3G/GPRS-card attached to the computer for syncronizing Outlook on the fly with our exchange server. It would be a cool feature to upload coordinates to a central server every x minutes for friends or wife to know where you are or for me to find the car when stolen, but thats more for fun than an actual need...
For everyone that just uses WLAN every now and then one could syncronize that information at a later time. That data could be used to log how long time it takes using that roads at that time of day, that day of the week compared to al other possible routs to fine tune route planning software...

I'd be interested too, although I have a trip calculator on board...
