Interesting....

This could be interesting.
It says that XM does that for Honda nav systems. What about other systems? Has anyone ever hacked this to see what the datastream is like to be able to feed it into some other software? Likely not, but it's an interesting concept, don't we think?

NEW YORK -- Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (SIRI) has signed an agreement with mapping and traffic-data company Navteq Corp. (NVT) to provide traffic-reporting services over its U.S. satellite radio network, and integrate those services into car navigation systems.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Sirius, based in New York, said Tuesday that the new service will offer regularly updated traffic information such as accidents, scheduled road closings and other traffic-related incidents.

Traffic information will be integrated into car navigation systems combining route guidance and mapping.

The deal comes as competition heats up in the satellite-radio market. Sirius archrival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (XMSR) offers a traffic service with Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (HMC) that feeds XM's real-time traffic information into the map on the car's navigation system.

XM does something like this with weather for airplanes, I think, but it's really expensive.

This would be sweet to hack both. Live traffic and weather reports for those of us who aren't lucky enough to get free WAP

I think I read that the Pioneer Avic does/will supports XM traffic updates in certain areas.

I know this is old, but has anyone found a way to get this to work?

having real time traffic stats without having to subscribe to XM (which I refuse to do due to poor sound quality) would be a great feature to have.

I know that there are sites like Microsoft's Live, but how would you be able to port that over to something that's easily readable?
