Pull the plug on the gps when it starts going crazy...then go to the hardware area and disable "serial mouse" then it is ALL GOOD!

Hey guys, I realize this is an old thread, but I've looked all over the place, and can't seem to find a schematic for the serial interface needed to complete this mod. I have most of the components lying around, and I'm comfortable building simple circuits like this... just need to get a good diagram, and I'm all set.
Thanks!
Scott

I'm getting ready to do a variation on this hack some sites you might find valuable are:
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/15/45/
http://chaokhun.kmitl.ac.th/%7Ekswichit/ap275/ap275.htm
http://chaokhun.kmitl.ac.th/~kswichit/MAX232/MAX232.htm
http://www.radio-active.net.au/web/gps/oncore.html

The only difference for my project fingers crossed is that I don't actually have onstar on my vechicle. Does anyone know if I just put power to pins 2&3 on the oncore board if it will work?

just waiting for my components to come in from Mouser.

Onstar - Working or not working

I have read the whole thread and I do not remember my question being answered. I have a 99 Suburban that never had Onstar installed. Am I SOL? Do I have to have a subscription working to make the GPS work? If Onstar does not have to be working, can I get a minimum of parts off another vehicle or would it be nearly impossible to find and remove all the wiring and parts? The answer may be obvious to everyone except me. I have never had a vehicle with Onstar. I have no idea what all it does except for the ads on TV. I have been married over thirty years and have never owned a GM product until now. Thanks for any answers.

but if ur car never had onstar, maybe it doesnt have the gps in it in the first place

and if it doesnt, wouldnt it be easier to just buy a gps mouse?, they arent that expensive

lol i agree....also gayden i believe you are sol....why add onstar just so you can use its hardware for gps? go buy a gps unit like the bu 353 or the br 355 and spend the 90 or 100 bucks and be done with it.

Obviously you are right. I got to thinking after I posted what a dumb question I asked. There are other methods to do the same thing. Thanks for setting me straight.

Can someone explain me how it works? Here is the picture of the mod described on many sites.

_____________ _______________
| | | |
| OnStar Main tx|---------------> | OnStar GPS |
| Board |<-------------- | Module |
|_____________| ^ |_______________|
| |
| |
| |
________v____
| tx |
| CarPuter |
|_____________|

Not a single website tells to disconnect TX line between Onstar Main Board and OnStar GPS module. Therefore both CarPuter and OnStar main board will be driving the same line at the same time. My guess Carputer overpowers OnStar. However sooner or later something will break.

Thanks.

Think this would work?

Hey, new guy here. I have the old onstar in my car and i am thinking of doing this. Does anyone see any reason why this cable would not do the same thing as the rlc-1 cable in one of the original hacks.

http://http://apple.clickandbuild.co...dCategoryID=47

I know this thread is old but its one of the newest i have found concerning this little project. Thanks.

Onstar switching to Digital Service

Onstar is switching to digital service as of Jan 2008 in Fed 2008 Analog will be bo more.

My question is. Will the analog GPS still work. or will it be turned off due to no analog singnal. GM says they will not support analog. all signals will be digital. if thats true then no GPS sending an analog signal will work anymore even with the Mod correct. ?

Should still work fine. The GPS is independent of the Onstar, you just won't be able to hack into the digital systems.
