Wasn't it already spiraling toward the Sun?

True though it's doubtful the Earth's collision coarse with the Sun will have much to do with it.

Actually, the day after I started this post I saw on NBC Nightly News that a US Navy ship got confused because the shoreline in Indonesia was not where it was supposed to be according to GPS. I guess that was more of a map issue than a satellite issue

If you saw the pictures of the coast line, you'd understand. Some places are just not there. At all.

Its not that the GPS was off, it was that the maps had become outdated. The grid will always stay the same, its where everything is in relation to the grid thats changed.

Any one have an idea how accurate military GPS is? I know its classified, but I've heard it can be within inches when needed. I recall that if you are standing still it can become that accurate.... as in a ground force lacing a target for a LGB

at one point in time, i heard 10cm. as far in movement, i believe its 5m without any help of waas.
this is because they use two bands, l1 and l2. i'm just not sure if the l2 band is reserved military only or not. because these bands operate at different frequencies, the error figure is different which after processing can be combined to get a very accurate result. also, i believe there is more information sent down each transmission such as atmosphere loss which helps reduce the error even further.

I will say that the accuracy is better for Lat/Long than it is for Altitude, and that it's not 10 cm but it's much better than 5M.

Also the "error" in civilian GPS is something that is inserted into the signal and can be turned on and off at the military's whim, as can be civilian access to the GPS signal at all. Usually the access we are granted to the GPS signal as civilians has an accuracy better than that generally advertised.
