inverting map colors.

Im new to GPS. Infact I havent even installed one in mine. But the other day i was in a G35, where I saw the coolest thing ever. The colors of the map inverts depending on daylight conditions. The car entered a tunnel, and the map instantly flipped colors.

Has anyone done this ? I was thinking maybe a small photocell module connected through the serial port ? Then again the program itself would have to recognise this.

Before someone bashes my head in -> I search the forum a little, but I didnt know exactly what keywords to search for. Nothing turned up.

This feature is usually called night mode or something like it and most real-time nav programs have it although its usually done through software and not hardware.

Maybe when the headlights were turned on?

^^Thats probably it. The G35 has Auto headlights like I do in my Altima, and if I enter a tunnel it turns them on, when you exit it will turn them off.
This brings up an interesting idea for Frontends in general: Is there a way to connect to the headlights to automatically go from Day/Night mode?

It's easy enough, as long as the nav proggy supports it and there is an SDK. I don't know of any front-ends that include it though!

The circuit here can do what you want. You'd still need to get a front-end to support it. FP currently uses time of day to trigger day/night skins but it's probably not a huge deal for the monkey to add support for the hardware trigger. http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/general-hardware-discussion/28015-simply-serial-input-circuit.html
