Doesn't anyone know if removing the case will affect the satellites it's able to pick up?

Specifically, my BU-303 is on my roof but it's is rather ugly.. so I want to take the guts out and put it inside a painted sharkfin style antenna.. However, I don't know if the signal strength will be the same with a new case and no magnet on bottom..

the magnet is a completely seperate part from the gps receiver. i'm not sure if its essential. i'm assuming it's just there to keep it on the roof or trunk lids of cars. if mine still worked i would test it out, but as far as i know, it doesn't work.

btw, i will eventually be takign better pictures of the unit

I think you should keep the magnet, it helps to get a better singal. Look at this

Well, it looks like I definately can't include the magnet (or any of the shell) in the little enclosure I'm trying to modify for the BU-303.. it's just way too small..

So after a few hours of cutting, I manage to get it all stuffed in and miraculosly it all works fine without the magnet!!! I guess I got lucky..

FYI, this is where I stuffed the antenna:

i dont remember 100% how to get to the screw, but on the back where the s/n is, you pull that back to get to the magnet an di think its under the magnet....

I don't think it is the magnet. It is the metal "groundplane" created by the metal of the magnet, and the metal of the car.

You can get away with out a magnet, but make sure you mount on on something metallic, like the roof of a car (Unless the car is FG)

a guy on the boards has a fiberglass trunk on his mustang and said that the gps and xm receiver attatched to the bottom of the lid work fine.
