gps w/ voice

I use Street Atlas 8, which has voice directions. I think some older versions did as well, which you should be able to pick up quite cheaply.

thanks. I looked at co-pilot and it touts support for pocket pcs. can I use it with a laptop as well? i see that you need a desktop or laptop to install the maps and what not, so I assume you can connect the compass to the laptop and use it, but it's not clear. does anyone have experience with this? how about street atlas? are there any other suggestions?

I'm playing with the idea of putting a laptop in my car and would like to use the same display for winamp and gps.

Yes, you can use it with a desktop/laptop. U just need a serial port + ps2 for power and the CD's or install the eniter package.
Once u use co-pilot, u might not want to use anyother other GPS apps out there. Take it from me i have used quite a few and nothing compare to CoPilot. Next one up is prolly ms streets and trips 200x

I tried CoPilot and despised it. I just didn't like the interface at all. It's just a matter of opinion - have a look and choose what appeals to you.

LoreleiGuy u are the first one to not like copilot. Are u telling me that in the car u really want a fancy looking or what not map instead of making sure it guides u to ur destination. Personally CP is prolly the best one out there for car. infact what do u use ????

As I said above, I use Street Atlas 8. And yes, I do prefer its interface to Copilot. SA does just as well guiding to my destination, and it doesn't look all cartoony. I'm not saying Copilot isn't a perfectly good choice. It's just not what I like.

I find Street Atlas pretty worthless (in my experience) for use while driving a vehicle.

It's good for planning trips, but just sucks for actual navigation. CoPilot is the opposite. It sucks for planning a trip, but for actually driving it's great.

I have used them all...Nothing compares to CoPilot. I give those guys at MIT credit for their hardwork. I recall taking some computer class here at the university and the amount of calculation that goes into this sort of thing is amazing and they seem to have NAILED it!

I dont mean to bring up an old thread but hey I used the search and I found this. LoreleiGuy, Since you love SA so much maybe you can help me with my Street Atlas 2003 Pro. How do you set the software up so that it always use the current position as starting point instead of manually enter the starting point. Copilot uses current position as starting point automatically. There's no need to enter the starting point. 2nd, How do you set SA so that it automatically reoute when you miss a turn. All my does is it keeps saying "off route, off route" I KNOW IM OFF ROUTE DAMNIT GUIDE ME TO THE RIGHT ROUTE. Copilot recalculate new routes instantly if you miss a turn.

I actually don't use the routing features that much. I just like to have a local map on display. But to use the current point as the start, I think there's a menu choice just for that under the routing menu.

And I take back what I said about CoPilot. I was confusing it with whatever cartoony screwup came with my RandMcNally gps receiver that put a useless gauge across half the screen.

I'm sorry I can't help you more. I just use my gps software for the pretty maps. I already know basically where I'm going.

Under GPS there is a selection labled back on track... click it.
