Is there a lot of overhead foliage in this garden? Or tall surrounding buildings? You sure the computer is recognizing the receiver properly?

Don't expect a lot in the house, thats why I had a friend test it outside both here and in his garden with the same result.(I don't have a laptop, or at least one with usb)
Any better Chairboy.
There a few trees in my garden, but its about half a mile in any direction to another house and I have a clear line of sight of 95% of the horizon..Have not been in my friends garden but it is in a built up area, but only double story houses.

First off use some GPS software like D3 to make sure it detects it then do a COLD restart and then wait 5mins for it to get it's bearings if it doesn't work then there must be something wrong with the reciever.
Also put some metal under the receiver for the magnet to latch on
If none is available try tin foil i've heard people using tin foil for reception.
If none of this works get a refund or a new one

Should the red led on the side be constant on, or flashing. This one is constantly on. The last one I had (that one worked when it felt like it) showed a flashing led and picked up more than one satelite (in the house)

If it's opn then it means it had the sats locked
Flashing means it's searching for sats and trying to aquire them
I think thats it.....
It Could be the other way around i'm not sure...
Someone can you Confirm this?
Also if you still don't get any lock try leaving unplugged for 24 hours then try reaquiring it again

Put it on the roof. The reason why you get nothing or close to nothing within your vehicle is because many cars today come with "Solar Windows". Basically its a special film to keep heat outside your car and drastically hurts wireless signals trying to enter your vehicle such as the gps signal.

Mine is under my plastic dash panel, under the windshield, and works great inside the garage with tons of crap in the attic above. It must be your glass.

easy solution
easy solution, dont think about it
as for "the *****" GPS, buy a full pc compliant one, that is also waterproofed, designed to work inside and outside a car... they usually cost over $200.00 but even australian stockists sell them...
OR, buy a magellan/garmin unit, that will run off 12v when in the car, and its own battery when external to the car, that way the signal is stronger, and you can mount it on the centre console etc... but again, you have too pay alot more than what a humble bu303 costs, money, i dont have.
and just my extra $0.02, my bu303 works well, on the dash of my hilux surf (4runner for the americans) attached to the window sill of a rear door, or on the roof... i also went to the trouble to waterproof it... and i cant complain...
also, i found running a USB extension cable helped break thru the interferance caused by my indash LCD, the EMF of LCD's can prevent a bu303 getting a lock, an extension cable helped in this department, and allowed me too mount it in more places

@cold_fusion: spanks, will try that
@Enforcer: I aint got no parcel shelf, note the "T" after 525i
@NiN^_^NiN: I've acually done 300km in snow, rain and ten below with the crap receiver on the roof, and it still works...won't do it again though....
@Altimat: yeah, the glass could be an issue in the beemer but hardly in the ****ty ol alfa :P
Anyways, gonna try the ol place-on-parcel-shelf-under-the-plastic-stuff-in-crappy-ol-alfa-trick. Thank you everyone for your input.
I really van't decide if I want the carpc in the alfa or the bmw...
