Are all GPS Receivers the same?

As the topic states, I am wondering if all GPS receivers are the same? I am just looking on EBay and there are about 4 or 5 different manufacturers and I am not too familiar with all the specs that GPS goes by. I am looking at GPS USB receivers if it makes a difference. Any guidance, suggestions or help is appreciated.

Is there anything in particular that I should be looking for?
I would search but I am not sure what it is (terminology) taht I should look for in order to find good/informative results.

Suggest any search criteria and I will definitely look some info up.

Thanks guys/gals
J

Bump up because I am not sure what I should look for if I were to search or what criteria I should use to qualify a GPS receiver.

Any help is appreciated

They're all *relatively* the same. There are different chipset revisions. Try to do some research at gpspassion.com to see the differences in some chipsets/devices. Also, look at semsons.com to get a taste of the different gps devices available.

I dont agree - The theory is all the same, but the more expensive units have many additional reafutres...
Pay attention to Lock time, for a 3d lock. time to lock from cold / rest
I have used a cheap one, and Im very with my investment in a quality unit.

Then again, if its only occasional use, and you dont mind the wait, the 45-75 range will do fine.

<> Number of channels are climbing from 12 to 20
<> Some now have all the features of a handheld gps AND the ability to connect wired/or wirelessly to your PC/PocketPC/Palm.
<> Just a matter of time before DeadReckoning is standard
<> Some record the last 30,000 points for path/rout retrieval.
--- yeah, they're not all the same.
Either buy cheap now and plan upgrade if you want features yet to be fully developed. --Or spend some cash now for a unit that will suit your needs for the term.

I just got a Holux GR-321 that is pretty nice.
∙ Quick locks,
∙ Bluetooth AND USB
∙ Battery or cable powered
∙ Port for ext antenna
∙ SiRF and NMEA compliant
