Haicom HI-202E

i got this USB GPS receiver for the one and only reason that it's cheap. I'm currently using it with my laptop (running Route 66) and i find the signal comming in really slow. Anybody know whether this has something to do with the GPS receiver or is it just me using crappy software ?

where do you have it located in your car? is it just taking a long time to get a fix?

it's located under the windshield on the dash, attached with a suction cup.
it's slow both in acquiring the signal and in updating the information to the laptop. My 'you are here arrow' is always lagging a while behind.

How far behind.. It is usually a second-ish behind and only updates once a second.

I would just hold it outside the window and see if your getting a better lock. because if your not getting a good signal it will cause a pretty big lag. but stevieg is right there always will be a small amount of lag. It might be something in your windshield that is causing low signal.

i'll try the holding outside the car when it's not raining (winter in belgium = rain)
In general it lags enough to cause confusion between one exit and the next on the highway. Keep in mind that this is belgium and that there are exits every couple of miles here.

Yeah but it should do a little better than that. Where I live we have exit's that are sometimes less than a mile apart and my gps has no problems with them.

Mine is lagged on a motorway by less than 100 yards...

On a street with two junctions 30 feet away you can't miss them let alone a couple of miles..

That is way too laggy

I use that GPS with no problems. Chuck out route 66! What speed is the laptop?

It can also be a symptom of software. Some software can take an advance according to speed.

I was running the Haicom with route 66, it was fine on my PIII 1Ghz PC, but had trouble on my original laptop a PI 166MMX. used to work Ok on my PII 366 laptop but didn't do extensive testing on it htough. I have since moved to a BU-303 as the Haicom stopped detecting Satelites after about 18-20months. Also I am now using Destinator variations and have found the BU-303 to perform slightly better than then HAICOM did. Although saying that the BU-303 seems to be playing up at the moment as it loses signal more often than it used to.
