9GB a lot? Not really. Look at the TerraServer maps. They are 12 Terabytes when not compressed.

...when not compressed. I'm sure someone can write a script to snag current Lat/Long from a GPS unit and promt for a destination, then insert those in the maps.google search field.

That would give you directions from wherever you are updated as fast as you can research. Though that would kill a lot of google bandwidth if that was popular and requires internet access.

Maybe Google will make the entire system available for download. Then we dont kill bandwidth and need internet access.

I was going to screen-scrape MapQuest for a web site I'm putting up to show my progress on a cross-country road trip, but I might go with Google Maps now.

Zang!

wifi

WOW, it works great. I tested it from my house and it even points to the exact section of the house that I’m in.

I guess the only down side is that most of us don't have a constant internet connection in our cars.

Hopefully it won't be too long before someone comes up with a program that when you connect to an AP, it snags your lat/lon from your receiver and plugs it into the gmaps allowing you to display a satellite photo of where you are.

I can see it now……. “Voice” (Wifi detected….. downloading aerial snapshot)

God, I can’t wait!!!
