google GPS integration

So in the old thread, someone mentioned that it was only a matter of time before someone built this functionality.

Well, it seems the time has come:

http://gmap.glenmurphy.com/

Probably requires an active internet connection though, i haven't tried it!

Interesting that the guy who made it lives in Austrelia, where there aren't any google maps for yet.

this is pretty damn cool, works like a charm.
Now if they build a frontend for it so the maps run fullscreen and a toggle to hide/show the search options on the right hand side this would be great.
And make some kind of utility that would download the maps by state and store them localy i would be set.

seeing as how quickly someone did this, and not even haveing map data for the country he lives in, the guys at google have got to be working on something, they would be dumb as hell not to.

thanks for the link

I doubt. Any mapping software keeps maps in raster format with highly compressed data. In order to keep data in GIF format you will have to store huge number of files.
i.e. with 1000x1000 m map images. In order to store 300x300km state, you will have to keep 90000 images. with 100kb each, you will end up with 9Gb of data.

Seems it's hard to get the locator icon unless you use the directions element. But if you code your LAT/LON into a URL like this it'll show you the spot.

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&sadd...77.03647&hl=en

Drop the t=k parameter and you should get a map instead like this:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=38...77.03647&hl=en

That doesn't seem like too much. I mean, yeah 9gigs is a lot of data but I have 16 gigs of mp3's, so carrying the data around on a 60 gig hard drive isn't too much of a hardship. Plus, you don't need to work with the whole database, just the part that appears on the screen and the nearby edges.

I'd think that even if they don't make this stuff available to download, they ought to and arguably over the next couple of years as EVDO falls in price or WiMax takes root or some other technology, we'll either get to access it for free, or they'll decide to sell it for a reasonable price.

you need to remember that google doesn't store the maps in photos, it stores it as vector data with points that indicate intersections, pois, etc. The few gifs that googles does use are little images composed together and repeated to make up what you see on screen-this is the same with any other map program. Even with all this data, 9gb is just wrong. MS Streets takes up 2 cds which is less than 2gb. Although unlikely, if Google were to come out with a standalone mapping software, using maps with gps would be different than it is now.

Are you referring to the new Google satellite map service? That is bitmapped sat photos, not vector data.
