The thing you should also bear in mind with GPS signals, is that there are any number of other effects at work, as well as your installation
- number of sats & position
- radio reception conditions, atmospheric conditions, sun-spots...
- anything that the US gov is doing with the sats, maintenance, war...

It may be your GPS is working just as well as it always was...

I removed the super cap and sealed the unit using a glue-gun

Mine (the rusty one a few pages back) has worked FLAWLESSLY since.

I use an opus so the power to the USB is permanent so lock-time is not affected.

You mileage may vary.

I guys, I screwed my brand new navilock and are using it without the cap for a while now. some times it takes longer to get a lock but after that no problem at all.

check these 2 pics:

on the second one you can clearly see a + and - mark. I guess you can use those for a larfger cap pherhaps.

Tip when soldering your new battery on... watch your fingures - the battery gets real hot real quick.... I now have an imprint on one of my fingures now lol.. will go in a while..

PS Can some one advise what the proper battery code is. Its very simular to another 'watch' battery but they are 1.5 as a rule...

Any direct suppliers in the UK would be good as I used a 3v replacment for the mo...

look everyone, (battery/ super cap?)- doesnt matter... *I originally started this thread 3 months ago, and i guess i never came back to it.. *SORRY*. But in any case,
when your BU-303 Gps starts to fail- just open it up (2 tiny screws on bottom under the rubberpad), and find the battery/supercap thingy *looks like a small watch battery and says 3.3volts on itlike a watch battery also*, and RIP[I][U] it out (it should be safe and not harm the unit), then put it back to gether and it will work just fine, it will take 30 more secs(roughly) to lock on *in the beginnning only* and you didnt need to buy a new one at all. mine is working fine 3 months later.

That's how I understood it.

I've ripped the battery/supercap thingy out of mine.

Before I did it, I was going maybe an hour without lock at it's worst - it was terrible, and through a city it was useless. I went for a country drive and actually got LOST because it couldn't find a lock.

Since I've taken the battery/cap OUT COMPLETELY I have never had a problem. My GPS lock issues have dissapeared!

Finger crossed, anyway

my bu-303 wasn't working right etheir so then I put it on a metal surface and it worked just fine. I think the magnet needs to be on a metal surface, I can't explain why but those are my findings.

if you read previous pages, its to do with antennae theory, large ground plane single dipole etc. etc. do a search of maxwell

. im sure youll bore yourself in 5 minutes, ive been doing this for 5 years, you can imagine how over it i am.

After almost eight months, my gps mouse crapped out too. It would barely keep a lock and was taking forever to even get the first lock.

For those that have the Rikaline 1060, I had to use Visegrips to open mine up. It didn't have any screws along the bottom, something I found out after peeling away all of the glue. The housing had four clips; two along each of the long sides and was glue to boot. After I got the housing off, I found that it was enclosed in another metal housing. I carefully pried open the lower half of the metal housing and found the battery/cap somewhere in the middle of the PCB. Be very careful when removing the battery, since the way mine was wired, the metal housing had the ground wire soldered on to it.

After putting it back together, I checked to make sure it would still turn on and plugged it into my carPC. Took a little bit longer than I can remember to get a lock, but I haven't driven around yet to test.

As far as the battery/cap argument goes, it seems like all gps mice are not created equal. Mine had an SMP backup battery and not a supercap.

Ok........ So I guess taking the battery out had no fookin!!!! effect on a lock. As long as the car is not moving, the damn, POS gps mouse can get a lock. As soon as I move, it loses the lock.

On the first try after taking the battery out, it took mouse an hour to get a friggin lock with the car moving. I'm certain that it has nothing to do with the location, since I had it in the same place for the last four months without a single hiccup. Since I've already taken it apart, I'm going to try and solder a watch battery holder to the mouse and use a 3.3V watch battery.

Will keep posted with the results.

I have an old Deluo GPS (with some form of Evermore chipset in it). I took to it with a screwdriver and a Leatherman yesterday, and ripped the battery/cap style thing off the board. It was not a delicate operation.

Reinstalled the drivers, locked first time.

The magnet that is in the base of mine has no connection with the circuitry inside, and as it's sitting on the dash, there is no metal for it to en-magnetise-ify with, so I can't offer any feedback on that front.
