Allright, from what I can see, your going to have to remove the current antenna and solder the new pigtail in it's place.

but yeah, the solder bump in the middle of the antenna is the primary lead, and there should be a ground underneath the antenna

yeah, I would say leave the antenna on the board, but it will probably just inhibit operation

yeah it will be tricky, because the antenna is more than likely glued to the board, I was able to remove mine by sucking all the solder off the top and twisting the antenna to break it loose

So i gave it a shot and I think i did allright

I just used a lot heat and desoldering braid then used a small flat head screwdriver to gently pry up the existing antenna. I do have one last question though. Given the attached picture for reference, i attatch the shielding of the 50 ohm cable to any one of the flat solder pads and the core to the the center hole right?

That would be correct, just make sure you align the cable so that the smallest amount of core is exposed, the ideal situation is that you solder the braid to the pad and then the core comes right out and solders to the center pad. That way you minimize signal loss

What kind of antenna are you planning to use?

Also, any chance of getting a better shot of the solder pads and the bottom of the antenna?

Thanx
Michael

I will post a picture once i get the 50 ohm cable and solder it on. The bottom looks the same though you cant really see anything. There is a metal block that takes up almost the entire lenght and width of the bottom of the circuit board

So i gave it my best shot and i an unpleased to say that it isn't working. I did as jcdillan said but it didn't work.

I got the adapter cable that i was waiting on and cut one end striped it and soldered it as instructed. After a test run in the car the GPS saw between 0 and 2 satelites but never locked onto any of them.

Then i spent several hours trying different things like changin the pads it was connected to, connecting all ground pads, soldering to a pin labled ANTPWER and GRND. All of this showed now difference.

I then busted out the multimeter and apparently between the center pin and the ground pin i was unable detect any voltage. The antenna is expecting between 3-5 volts.

I then looked at the deluo website and they had something that is interesting.

http://www.deluoelectronics.com/cust...p?productid=50

My conclusion is that either the antenna is screwey or the GPS circuitry is different although the two images look very similar. I also could have damaged something when removing the internal antenna because i had to use a lot of heat to remove it.

Any one have any suggestions... maybe something that i haven't thought of before i trash this gps and get the one with the external antenna connector?

Well for the second time i tried to solder back on the internal antenna and it doesn't work. I think i am going to try to sell some stuff so i get the deluo with the external adapter
