GPS Tracker - Stop your car being stolen

Well i was just down at jaycar for lunch to get my componets for my HUD display (forgot the damn list of things doh) and i saw this kitt for controlling relays by sms.

After buying it $50 later and reading the instructions (gotta build this thing is a monster ) I came up with the perfect idea for GPS Tracking.

Now My pc doesn't have a Auto-On feature but with this kitt i can send a sms to the car and turn the PC on.

Then I can send a sms from the PC with the GPS position of the car then i can send a SMS to turn the imoblizer on and keep getting GPS data so i know where the car is.

Now the Datacable for the phone would be going to the PC and the Standalone board.

The pc won't be able to trigger the imobilzer by accident and it's not needed by the PC to turn it on if the pc can't switch on.

So by this method you can turn the PC on get gps position then shut the car down and call the cops yourself.

You can also have input triggers for when you car alarm is triggered etc.

This sounds like a good solution I think what do you guys think?

The kitt is from here:

For the circuit, pcb and the hex code.

Can control and text back the status of a port. Like ignition on? alarm on?

Thanks thats very handy

The kitt i got has 8 Relays and 4 inputs and you can get it to send a sms when a input is low or high and if a relay is switched on or off so you can get a sms that ignition is on and alarm is on and you could also disable the alarm if you wanted to Also you can have it not send a sms saying the ignition isn't on but you send a sms to the phone to see if it's on instead of automaticlly tell youg u it'd on or off.

Some 1 smarter than me could make a serial/USB input device so when someone sms's the car it can get the data from the GPS without needed the pc turned on.

that be a smart way as no PC is required and also it be hardwired so even if they broke in and disconnected the battery you would know if it was and you could take action.

Just an idea but I think this could work cause if for some reason the PC can't boot up you have a standalone device to make the car stop which can't be accidently triggered by outsiders unless they know the code to turn the car off.

You can also have a password for accessing the phone.

If it had a GPS input as standard then it be the perfect hardware for us carpc's but for now it can be used with pc on and a GPS logger

Cool

I like that way cause then it's all standalone and the GPS signal can have a passthrough so the PC connects to the sms module so it can use GPS but not interfere with the actual sms unit.

I'm kinda not looking forward to soldering all this sit lol oh well it's a job that must be done

Still i like being able to remotely turn the pc on and off and stopping the car if it does get stolen even if i can't tell where it is altho lets hope there not smart enough to have it under a huge SLAB of concreat so the mobile can't connect to the nmetwork

sounds pretty hardcore.. good luck.. hehe.. it's like trying to incorporate 3 devices into 1 system.

imobolizer, pc, mobile phone..

you'll be keeping your telco happy though with all the sms's you'll be making.. haha

maybe you can send a sms to your car and it can sms you back telling you which street it's located in rather than gps co-ordinates from reading the gps software.. that'd be pretty awesome. if you work it out post some pics of your setup so i can have a look. cheers

The GPS is shared between the tracker device and the PC, as well as the mobile phone is being shared.

Oh you can also activate the drivers eject seat if you want it to by sending a txt.

Actually you can have it so it will only sms you if the car alarm goes off or it wont sms u at all unless you sms it to see what is on and off so it's not much money

Street name might be better if no access to gps program hmm...

Its better if it rings you. SMS is not really that reliable.

Texting streetnames with the PC being switch off? Still possible. The whole stripped down map is stored on a SD card. The tracker then read the memory to see which street the car is currently on.

The problem is trying to find a way to decode the map supplied by tomtom, destinator, etc. Some serious coding skill is needed for all this.

Well thats why id like it to be hardware based where it only needs a usb/serial gps plugged into it no PC is needed and you sms it to grab the gps position.

The pc can use the GPS with a passthrough cable but otherwise the whole system would be isolated

The idea is to also pass through the mobile phone serial connection. It can be used as part of the tracker or used to connect to the internet when the PC is running.

Well not this as the module i got requires old nokia's like a 3210 or the every popular 5110 :P

I don't think wireless internet from the phone to upload logs is really needed.

Right now the system i am building will allow me to shut the engine off and monitor other parts of the alarm.

The pc will be used for street names and suburbs but otherwise thats if for what i'm using it for.

It be nice to have GPS strings supported at the hardware level but it's past my knowledge.

For me it's all i need and for everyone else it should be fine altho improving it is always welcomed
