Even though it works inside, I bet you it would work that much better if it was outside. Nothing blocking the signal will always be better than something blocking the signal, no matter how insignificant the blocking material is (plastic, glass, etc).
I do agree though, try it inside first, if it works well enough then don't bother with trying to get it outside. If you do have to mount it outside I think the only way to get it out there would be to drill a hole or to use an existing hole (radio antenna location perhaps?).
