IGuidance + Royaltek Sapphire + ??? = Problem

Hey all,
I just got this in the mail: http://www.inavcorp.com/products/iguidance2_combo.html

All excited, I installed the software and the hardware and it all worked great. I plugged the Sapphire into my powered 1.1 hub up front and ran the wire up the dash, got my first GPS lock nearly instantaneously. Fantastic...

Did a full shut-down, worked fine, and came back fine. Then I opened FP & IGuidance and drove around, then did a standby (my normal procedure when leaving the car). Standby worked fine, until I turned it back on. None of my USB devices were responding. That's my lilliput, my griffin powermate, and the GPS receiver. And IGuidance wasn't moving, it was what was on the screen when I went to standby. FP was still playing my music, though.

After a few minutes, I turned off the car and the carputer just died. Then I turned it back on and it came on fine. Gave me a "windows has recovered from a massive nuclear detonation" error (or something like that) and worked fine. I disconnected my GPS from the hub, as I thought that was what it was, and kept going without. I'm going to try plugging the Sapphire straight to the MOBO as opposed to the hub.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause that? I would much prefer the Sapphire up front because I know the hub's power gets turned off on standby because it's powered off the +5 from the opus. Though if it's in the back, whatever. The little receiver isn't going to kill me.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Hmmm. I have a Royaltek Sapphire with the USB connector. It uses a little program that routes the USB to a serial port. Is this how yours works?

I have it up front on the dash, plugged into an unpowered USB hub and it works fine. I've never had a glitch with it waking from hibernation. I don't think I've ever tried it from standby, though.

Could there be a difference because I use a powered hub? It isn't on all the time, it gets power with the rest of the PC hardware (CDs, HDs, etc.). I'd imagine a bus-powered hub runs power all the time. When I plugged the receiver into the MOBO itself, everything works just dandy. I'm thinking it's because of the power timing. Not a major headache, I am not concerned that this little receiver is going to kill my battery. It is, after all, the only USB device that keeps power during standby.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have the Royaltek, touchscreen, and keyboard reciever (wireless) on the unpowered hub and I presume they are all drawing power. I've never actually looked into it, although I could swear the keyboard receiver doesn't light up if I press a key with the car off. It ought to if it was getting power.

In any case, I also have the Xenarc plugged into the cigarette lighter, so it's on standby all the time too. I drive the car daily, but not always on the weekend, so I can vouch for it starting easily after 3 day weekends, but not more!

I'd think the problem for your GPS is as you say, the powered hub. Try using an unpowered one (dunno if you can simply unplug the powered hub and make it "unpowered").
