I gather these things need to have a direct line of sight to the sky? Quite a problem on my SUV!

Or if you velcro it to the underside of a glass sunroof (if you have one) like I did

all those people mentioned so far are ok. But they are older generation. There's a new chipset which surpasses any other available chipset. You may want to check out some products with it. They are more expensive because almost all of them are bluetooth. holux's gpslim236 (this one actually works as gps mouse as well), bt-338 are two units. do your search on google. or better go to gpspassion.com and do your reading there. good luck.

Scratch that... Works fine, it was picking up interferance from somewhere, moved it to a different spot in the car and it works like a champ now. Highly recommend the Rikaline.

If i buy Rikaline or any of the GPS devices, is there another service that you pay for? like X dollars a month or year? or is it just install and go?

No, its free. The only thing you need is a GPS and mapping software and you can use it forever. The only fee I could think of is some mapping software may require a maintenance fee so you can donwload new maps.
