According to the specs of the unit, there is no GPS interface witht eh Road Angel to the PC. The USB is only used to update it's speed camera database from a PC.

the GPS would be connecting to a type of flash memory for the maps to be updated and would actually be able to use the GPS part of the road angel.

I thought the Road angel was capable of being used as a GPS receiver by outputting its current speed, heading, and location to the PC via USB...
Then a serial port driver something like the Prolific one would create a virtual com port and output the signal to that so progs like D3 can use the data stream from the Road Angel.

Re-post of one of my posts on digital-car.co.uk, I cannot guarantee it will work but might help you on your way. The 'can be used as GPS' might refer to the old one which has a serial port.

They use components from here:

And the exact driver that the Road Angel is using is this:
http://www.ftdichip.com/FTD2XXDriver.htm
Which is an API mode driver to allow the road angel developers to access the COM port data without exposing a COM port.
DON'T BLAME ME IF THIS DOESNT WORK... BUT
If you uninstall the supplied driver and use the one from this page:
http://www.ftdichip.com/FTWinDriver.htm
The road angel will expose a COM port. Switch GPS mode to ON, on ther road angel unit and test it out using this utiility from the manufacturer of the GPS unit inside the road angels homepage...
http://www.holux.co.uk/Downloads/GpsViewer.exe
SO, now you've done this and (assuming it works) want to update the Road Angel you would either need to uninstall these drivers and re-install the Road Angel supplied ones after turning GPS output off (then vice versa when you want to use GPS), or after turning GPS output off download the Serial Road Angel software:
http://www.blackspotinteractive.co.u.../roadangel.exe
And use that to update the road angel... However this might A) Work or B) Not Work or C) Corrupt your Road Angel - I say that because when I used a 3rd party serial-usb adapter with the road angel the GPS worked but when I updated it, it corrupted the road angel - luckily when I used the direct serial the software fixed it though

road angel gps
i have spoken directly to the manafacturer who has assured me the road angel i have works with gps, but they say that it dosnt work with the usb port, thats just for the updates.
They say i just need a serial cable and the data NMEA or something is available at 9600 baud rate, its been tested by them using autoroute 2003 and infomap...
They didnt test it with destinator but thats what i really wanna use.
Where can i get my hands on a serial cable and destinator trial?

Does it have a 9-pin serial port on the back? If you are not sure, have you got a picture of the back/part where the interfaces are?
It will be outputing NMEA sentances at 9600 baud, it will work therefore with Destinator 3, Road Runner's Mappoint support, pretty much everything really.

http://www.holux.co.uk/Downloads/GpsViewer.exe will help for testing it
You will need to have the road angel outside obviously or where it works in the car
EDIT: This is what you would expect to see if it works, or similar
btw, best thing to do is keep checking www.digital-car.co.uk about nthe UK meets.
