Where did you hear this from? I want to do this in my 2005 Impala. I don't want to destroy the unit unnecessarily.

I still don't get why people even bother. It's not like GPSs are super espensive anymore. The time and risk associated with cracking open my onstar versus spending $60 for a USB GPS... I'm just not seeing it. There's no other advantage, right? This is just a method for getting access to a GPS that's already in the car and getting NMEA?

Why bother?

Because its a cleaner install, theres no *satellite aquire* wait, and the antenna is already mounted for you!

1. My BR-3 USB GPS is mounted under my dash, completely invisible and has great sky vis.
2. Since it starts acquiring sats on power up, I never have 'acquiring sats' in my software either.
3. No need to mount an antenna. I get all the satellites I could want from where it is.

Not sure what problems you guys have if you need antennas. Do you live on the moon or something?

I have two Rikaline 6010s...one I bought new and one that came with the PC I just bought from a board member. I am interested because I would need only 1 usb hub in the back of the vehicle rather than another one up front.

Its true. In 2002, OnStar modified the unit to combine the communications and computer parts into one box to reduce costs and physical size. The change also included merging the GPS receiver board into the design rather than as a daughterboard. Pre-02 OnStars use a Motorola OnCore GPS receiver board.
