Ublox module , Nearly there!

Ok, I just bought the Ublox SBR-LS module plus the Murata gyro and ANN-MS active antenna. (Thanks to hklomann)

The connections for the module are as follows: (image 3)

Now I need help to get this working!

The gyro connects straight to the module( image 1)...and doesn't apparently require any calibration(image 2). Then I need to find the speed pulse in my Jeep. Connect all this together & I have a dead reckoning GPS system! Sounds easy, I know!

I guess I need..

1, to build some sort of daughter board that connects to the module which will holds the gyro and a back-up battery.
2, to find a speed pulse somewhere behind the dash.

Anybody already doing this?

I was just getting ready to order the module.

You are also going to need a rs232 level converter on your daughterboard, get the max233cpe as it does not require any external caps. As the gps module only outputs TTL logic, which your serial port will not like

And yes your going to need to find the wire that is called VSS. From what i've seen you can tap it directly from your ECU.

Honestly, if your not setup to make circuit boards, I would just make it on a piece of perfboard, it really isnt going to be that much wiring, all your going to have is power gyro and the rs232 converter.

Then you can just use a ribbon cable to connect the 2 boards together.

yeah i would just make a new board with all the connections you need on and then link the two with a ribbon cable. You make the new board the same size with corner holes and mount it above or below with spacers inbetween. I intend to mount the gyro near the centre of mass of my car so i might mount it remotely.

Hmmm, gyro placement. Does it need to be in the centre of the car? Is higher up better than lower down? Anybody know where they put them in the cars that have them built in?

I dont think the gyro placement will make a diffrence from what I have seen form ublox... as long as you keep it in its correct orientation...

I was looking at the ublox a few weeks ago... they have a ready-to-go package with deadreckoning, antenna, everything with rs-232 output ready for the pc... but for the whopping price of a mere $1500 I didnt think it would have much future in the carpc realm... For now I'm going with a garmin oem module system... hope it works out well enough

Where can I get the MAX233cpe from? My local shop only has MAX233cpp type. I take it that these won't do? Also they don't have 20 pin connectors at 2mm pitch either

Edit: Ok, MAX233cpe @ RS. Still looking for connectors and/or cable
