hi. i had a long plan to build a carpc and have GPS, but from reading this forum i was very disapointed. i was thinking i'd be able to have exactly what the OEM car navigation systems have, with traffic warnings (redirecting if necessary), camera detection, and nice 3d views.

but from reading all the posts, different applications are good at different things.

one's really good at map reading (copilot) but doesn't have 3d views.

none? of them can pick up traffic reports.

other's don't work with the PIO camera files but i suppose this can be done a long way round.

but the most annoying is the traffic reports. one of the main reasons i wanted it is so that it will take me off a road before i hit traffic.

just can't belive that there's no program that does it all in a decent way.

I am way lazy to research some of the stuff you mentioned, but just note that copilot DOES have 3D viewing. So may be more research will give you a more positive outlook on pc-based gps, although there iis definitely room for improvement.

ah sorry i stand corrected. according to the website the new version does support it. but i read lots of threads complainign about the lack of 3d view.

but thta's not even important. what i really want is the live traffic thing which finds another route.

As far as I know, there is only ONE OEM system with that, and that's the 2005 Acura RL (TL?). It uses XM's NavTraffic system and is the first (and I think, thusfar, ONLY) use of live traffic reports in an OEM setting.

The only other two in-dash units that support it are Pioneers AVIC-N2 and AVIC-D1. And as all of this was released in just the last few months, I don't think anyone has flocked to write anything for it yet.

You also have to realize that OEM systems are a LOT easier to deal with for developers. They don't have to take into account all the different hardware configurations that computers have. They can use dedicated hardware, with only the software they need (read: No OS) which makes it much easier to develop. And the market simply isn't there yet for anyone to spend the time trying to port it to PC. It's -barely- there for what they're already doing!

All of this stuff is still very much in it's infancy, you just have to keep that in mind..

Yes, and if the original poster lives (drives) in the USA outside of the only 22 areas covered by NAVTEC Traffic, no GPS unit would be of much help either.

By the end of this month (June 2005) NAVTEQ Traffic will be available in the following 22 markets: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco/Oakland, San Jose, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa and Washington DC.

You code a GPS app in asp.net, and then do the same thing in x86 assembler and tell me what's easier.

OEM's problems are just different, not easier to solve. It all comes down to market volume.
