i've been looking as well. it seems that there's one called "The Cap'n" that's supposed to be decent. Some others that I know of include Fugawi and P-Sea.

I'm completely new here and yes, my english sucks big time but I am dutch and so spend a lot of my time on the water. My original idea for making an carpc was not so much of a carpc but more an boatpc for my dad's ship (going to sail to England next week!) I've got a ot of experience with marine navigation, only thing is that I've only got european maps. The software to have or download is WinGPS 4 but until now its very expensive and there's no crack in sight... So the best thing to do is "find" memory-map navigator which will also run on a PocketPC. There are even quite a few new maps to be found on the internet. Be carefull though! If you are planning to use is on a sailing boat like I do (which has a... well kiel we call it in dutch, the long thing sticking out of the bottom to keep it upright) it's important to have new maps because of ever changing depts! With car navigation you would drive into a house if the situation changed since the day you bought your maps, wth a boat you can't see the difference. So: www.memory-map.com (also works with car navigation) or www.stentec.com

I am from Lafitte, LA, which is a small commercial fishing(shrimp, crabs, etc.) community just south of New Orleans. I have been building pc's for trawl boats lately. Most prefer either Captain Navigator or P-Sea Windplot. They aren't cheap but they both are very good software. Most of the smaller boats used P-Sea Windplot.
Also, my dad has been using the Deluo Marine GPS Receiver for about 9 months now and has had no problems with it yet.

Thats not a bad deal, P-Sea Windplott II costs $699 for the software. I got the deluo GPS Receiver for about $140. P-Sea only comes with a world map which isn't very detailed. For detailed maps for your region, it will cost you about an extra $250.

I have used The Cap'n on a 266Mhz laptop with a Garmin GPS76. It's not bad, fairly easy to use, uses raster charts. Local marine electronics guy has told me that Fugawi is very popular, but I haven't used it. Nobeltec is another brand. All of these are expensive and then you have to buy charts too which are not cheap either. At work I use OSL ECDIS, but that is mega expensive.
I have seen Fugawi and Nobeltec "around" on the net recently.

i'd love to just use the Garmin maps with my PC.
Sometimes I just don't trust the damn thing unless I built it. My damn garmin sometimes slips into demo mode.....which is easy to do when your getting beat up by the chop and your finger is going all over the place. I've even gotten into sounder mode.....and the model I have isnt supposed to be a combo unit.
