Arrow Street and Trips Meanders with BU-353

Has anyone noticed that the placement of the GPS point while in motion will start to wander off the road after a while? Im took the car out today on its maiden voyage and after about 10 miles the car started to drive in the river, at least on the map. I reset the tracking which fixed the mislocation but I wouldnt want to have to do that all the time. Anyone ever heard of this?

Did it happen just once, or it kept repeating itself over and over? How far did it move from your actual position? (How far was the river from the road for example?) When the problem occurred did the receiver have clear view of the sky in all directions or was the road among trees or buildings? Where is the GPS receiver placed? On the roof of the car or inside the car? If inside, then where exactly?

It is possible you have a faulty receiver. But if it only happened once I wouldn't worry about it (or if the distance was within 10 meters/30 feet.)

Its happened a few times, the placement of the device is on the outside of the car on the fender. the road is mostly clear skies. I wonder if its partially because of the latitude Im at here in fairbanks alaska that introduces errors. and the route onscreen actually matches the road but is probably about 10 meters off.

what do you mean by "I reset the tracking?"

Did that process take some unreasonable amount of time by any chance?

.. probably has something to do with that HAARP antenna array.

just kidding.

I've noticed similar behavior on occasion while using iGuidance, but it wasn't so much that the location would drift, it was the altitude that was fluctuating.

Some navigation software (for example iGuidance) "snaps" your position to the nearest road. That eliminates a little bit of the "natural" movement that you would normally see while observing your own GPS position on the map. Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005 doesn't snap your position to the nearest road, but instead it shows you exactly what the GPS receiver reports as your position. So when using S&T (or software that doesn't snap to road) you will more likely observe some movement even when you are stationary, because GPS receivers are not perfect. But this movement should not be excessive if the GPS receiver has clear view of the sky.

To diagnose the issue you have described I'd suggest considering at least temporarily to place the GPS receiver on the roof of your vehicle if at all possible. If the GPS icon only moves 5 or 10 meters away from what you think your position on the map should be I think that is still okay. If however your receiver has an unobstructed view of the sky and your position starts wondering away for example 100 meters from where it should be, then yes something is wrong and just ask for a replacement unit where you bought it. Bad units occasionally make it to dealers.

Ill post some pictures in a few days here, Ive pretty much got the whole setup completed. The GPS is facing up and out on the side of the car. Its not vertical to the sky but more of at a 70 degree angle.I could put it on the hood of the car to have it facing more vertical but the BU-353 seems to do really well in all sorts of conditions. It picks up multiple satellites in under a minute it seems. Ive also ran it with Delorme Street and trips 2005 and it did the same thing, but not too badly. I might have to try iguidance. Destinator seems to be a european piece of software and Nroute which I also have drives me nuts mainly because you have to put in a new disk for each area. I plan on driving from alaska to California so I want an all in one solution.

PUR DOM: MS S&T allows you to hit a button to turn off the GPS and then re-enable it by hitting it again. the GPS then seems to sync back up with the map.

Am i understanding this right, fender(us)=bumper(uk), so its being shielded from signals by the car?

I use S&T and I'm always right in the middle of the road. If I zoom down, it even shows me being in the correct lane of multi-lane roads. I do have a WAAS-enabled antenna though. That may be the difference.
