GPS Receiver That Keeps Track Of Location w/o Signal?

I know some cars keep track of the location (for instance in downtown areas where the signal might be lost) using accelerometers (I assume).

Are there any serial/usb receivers that can do this?

They use gyroscopes and a speed sensor from the ECU AFAIK

And also AFAIK, there are none that interface with computers unfortunately

edit: The features called dead reckoning BTW

Yeah, I thought that would be the case. If they were available though I don't think they'd be cheap.

On a similar topic, which receivers are better at keeping a signal?

I found this
http://www.whitebream.com/p801.shtml
So theres possible development but no product

I was just driving around SF last week and I kept loosing signal in certain spots because of the buildings. So I as well would like a dead reckoning USB/RS232 reciever

I currently use a Garmin OEM 15L
Its quite a good little reciever and can be even better depending on what antenna you buy. Requires a little wire splicing but its easy if youre familiar with just basic electronics

As, aoLhaTer stated its called Dead-Reckoning. I believe jcdillin and Scouce are working on something like it for there cars. Here's a link that might help.

Interesting link.

That's pretty much the problem I was considering. I'm not so much worried about losing signal in SF's downtown (as I know it like the back of my hand), but more about being in a similar location that I don't know.

Hmm, so you can add a seperate antenna to the GPS receiver? I am considering using a BMW, Audi or HOnda/Acura type little antenna that goes on the roof of the car instead of just putting the receiver on the rear deck.

Any antennas you can recommend?

I guess you've missed this thread:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/gps/49405-ublox-module-help-needed.html

Laidback already has it working and jsdillin is working on the design for a daughterboard to the gyro and interfacing the ublox module.
