I highly doubt they would sell something like that to the public. The only people that would seem to have an interest in something like this would be criminals, or the wannabe street racers who watched fast and furious one to many times. So my answer would be no, but someone else may know. If you don't mind me asking what are you trying to do that you need to track the cops?

Don't you think that whatever software they use would probably need to ping to see if the connection is still alive from time to time? If this was the case that means that the cop car is sending out a signal piriodically. If you could determine what frequency they are transmitting on, the power of the signal (less power would mean farther away from you) and direction from you (when a directional antena is facing away from the cop it should have quite a bit less signal then if it is facing them) then you could determine approximatly where it is. Or am i wrong about any of these assumptions?

Talking GPS Law Enforecement Locator

I dont street race, but I do SPEED & I don't engage in criminal activities, I am merely a Police officers cop car technology Fan, I like there car setup, which is the only reason I am building a Carputer. That & to surf the internet & to not need to buy Blank CD's & burn music onto a CD for my CD Player in the car, just download music off the internet & play (BOOM I'm Done) & emulation like Super,Sega,N64,Nintendo & Mame games for those long road trips to miami, download movies, Audio & Video chat/Instant Message @ a Gas Station using MSN Messenger & AOL while all inside my car.I remember reading something, a program from microsoft that is called, "Microsoft streets & Trips with GPS locator" valued at 130us. someone did a forum on it and I remember reading that you can scan the local streets and view things like possible law enforcement vehicles in your area while you drive...I was just wondering if there are any programs like that.because when I read the features of that item, it said nothing merely related of the forum I read.

More than likely, it said that it could show you where the law enforcement stations were. Most any GPS software has POI (points of interest), which include emergency points like police stations, hospitals, etc.

For speeding the only police you need to worry about are ones with laser/radar. Get the valentine 1, it's popular for a reason.

Now that you mention it though, you could interface the V1 into the carpc, the interface would be 2 way.

In recieve mode it would simply take the signal strength and location from the V1. The data would be merged with GPS location and the event would be recorded locally and if you have a wireless/cellular uplink it would submit the info to a private server online. At that point the online server could re-broadcast the event as a POI for any program that supports updating like Streets and Trips (just have to tweak it so it's always updating).

In send mode the interface would be connected to the private online server and pulling in event data that has been detected for more than 24hrs meaning that it's a stationary false alarm like an automated door at the local super market. It would compare that data with current GPS location and as soon as you get close to that area it would tell the V1 detector to temporarily mute and/or disable all alarms on the band that the false alarm was detected on (leaving other bands open to alert). It could also signal the V1 to enter a low level alert mode if the event recieved online is a confirmed/active police speed trap.

The end result would be that you would rarely pickup false alerts on the radar, you'd get early warning on speed traps, and you'd know where all the radar wielding police cars are in your local area.

The whole thing would be very tricky to implement, expensive as hell, and it would have to be private/underground as I'm sure law enforcement would not approve. A public system would seem to be more effective but do-gooders would start inserting false positives or use the event data to hide in blind spots.

Yeah this is one of those ideas you shouldn't type out online but I'm safe. I don't have the skill to pull it off and even if I did I don't have the resources. Plus I'm in Canada where the police just say they 'saw' you going fast.. Bastards.

EDIT: Oh and if you just want stationary targets without a CarPC you can get the Uniden GPS301

A looong time ago I read about a way to detect when cops cars are nearby, although you couldn't pinpoint their location. The idea was that cop cars have repeaters in them that receive the signal from the cop's walkie-talkie and amplifies it to send it on to the station. The repeaters broadcast a signal you could tune in and you ought to be able to tell when they are nearby.

Never saw any hardware on this and the technology has probably changed by now but I thought it was a good idea.

I like the donut POI better. Probably more accurate.
