I think it depends on the size of the block Anyway that makes sense and perhaps that is why changing the update timing did not seem to affect it.

World Wind might not lag as badly b/c it says "Problem connecting to network, will try again in 2 minutes" So maybe it uses cache directly thereafter.

Sxott, I posted in another thread that based on speed and heading one could extrapolate the location you would be at 2 seconds or so ahead of your reported location, no one responded so I guess its not as easy as it seems to a non-programmer like myself...

That's not a bad idea at all. In fact, even if the GPS loses sat fix, an app could just "assume" you are going the same direction/speed and calculate a best-guess location. It would be kind of like a software dead-reckoning solution.

My Holux GPSlim 236 actually does that automatically. If you are moving at, say, 60 MPH and it loses satellite signal, it assumes you haven't come to an inertialess dead stop just because it can't detect satellites. Instead, it just keeps reporting you moving at the same speed and vector for a while until it picks a satellite signal up again. This is great when you hit a tunnel and lose signal. Additionally, if it has a 3D fix and loses enough signal to drop to a 2D fix, it is smart enough to assume you haven't just dropped several hundred meters in one second, and keeps you at the same altitude until it has a 3D fix again. Not bad.

It really depends on your entire system - from GPS to display. I had to do some unusual optimization to get GooPs to be somewhat close to real-time. It's now between one half to one second from the time the nmea string is received by GooPs to when it actually shows up in Google Earth. I also did some tricks like projecting the cursor beyond the actual location to make it appear that it is where you currently are.
The lag is also more apparent the more "zoomed-in" you are.

When I use GPS in MS S&T it is right about on where I am at the time. When I use WW it is slightly behind, but google earth is like a block behind when I am only going 40mph. It also seems that update thing does nothing to ameliorate the problem. In fact it seems as though a refresh of 2 seconds is no better than 5. Is there a minimum time for updates or something?

Thanks

Download LInk: http://www.geocross.org/nmeage/nmeag..._installer.msi (latest release v 1.02)

California Traffic (CALTRANS) download link: http://dev.keyhole.com/traffic/CalTrans.kml

The program connects to your GPS and writes a google kml file every second or so with heading, range, tilt, and location. Edit the Configuration of nmeaGE as I've done.

Go to Google Earth and go to Add -> New Network Link and edit it as such on my configuration screen, pointing to the kml file you specified in nmeage.

You can also make your own icon. As you can see I love my TL too much.

Turn your GPS on and get ready for the most awesome GPS navigation experience
Best of all, provided you have a decent internet connecion, it's free!

I made a quick n dirty CF 1.5 skin for Google Earth + NMEAGE.

download : click here

It embeds both GE and NMEAGE so you can send keystrokes to change tilt and zoom. The forward and back don't do anything for now but the play, next and previous song should work with CF.

Raichu626: that is just an antenna, you need something more like this:

http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...roducts_id=137

or this:

http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...roducts_id=147

romul: Google Earth does do caching, but the problem is in order to get the data into the cache in the first place, you have to "fly" over every spot in the whole city while you are connected to the internet.

Once a second is as fast as you can update a network link in Google Earth.

You should try out GooPs (and SKINbedder). See SbV3-P2 in my sig. There is also an updated SKIN for CF1.6 in the SKINbedder/Skins forum.

No tracking/updating?

I went through the whole thread but couldn't find an answer, so I apologize if this has already been answered. I have a BU-353 so I know it should work, but GE doesn't follow my position. The KML file updates (3 second interval) and I can see myself move on the map, but GE doesn't follow it unless I hit "Play Tour" which moves the map only once, not continuously. I've checked the KML export and network link settings several times.

maybe: edit the link in GE and under "refresh parameters" check "zoom on refresh" or something like that

Seems like it has to be under Temporary Places. If I let nmeaGE add it there, it works. If I add it manually it has issues.

If you are having trouble with nmeaGE, you should try one of the other two solutions:
EarthBridge: http://mboffin.com/EarthBridge/
GooPs: http://sites.onlinenw.com/goops/

...and for a full touch-screen interface:
SKINbedder: SbV3-P2 /w GooPs SKIN for CF 1.5
Add-on: GooPs SKIN for CF 1.6

Is this skin just for CF? Or can we use this skin in RR?
