Ya, but that would take FOREVER to get a city done that way. I tried last night, it was a nightmare.

how much can you see after you remove the internet connection? there might be a way to change cache limit.

I tested it quickly without internet on a local drive and it worked OK.

To change the cache limit, go to Tools > Options > Cache.

edit: Very interested here if someone figures out how to automate preloading the cache. Hmm... could we feed nmaeGE coordinates overnight?

what if we could somehow just download the images by area, so that you can just download the whole city at once and merge it with the cache file.

anyways I tried it and it werks pretty sweet. I've been using it all day, logging into random wifi spots and caching up the maps, I usually stick to the same routes so its pretty quick to get it all clear. I'm going to hook up my phone again (hey - a good use for gprs!) I have edge in this area so I should be able to make it work pretty well.

it sure makes an impression when you show your buddies.

Im working on a program like that.. written in C#, especially focused for CarPC setups (and maybe give some api access for stuff like RR to get some stuff from google earth, like creating routes and other stuff, i might be realeasing the first version this weekend (which would have most of the features of the version, but after that I hope to get more stuff running.. I'll keep you guys posted.

I am so hoping that one of the smart people here can figure out a way to use this without an Internet connection...think FreeDrive or MapMonkey (customised interface for CarPC) with the most incredible maps...

I just stumbled on this thread and found it interesting. I got a chance to speak with someone from Keyhole (now Google) and she explained that the google earth tool taht we use is just a small part of the google earth idea. It is used as a GIS tool to display lots of kinds of information overlayed on maps. google earth is just the client. they also sell google earth servers that hold the data so you don't have to go back to google.com for everything. my point is, that perhaps someday you will be able to store parts of maps so you dont have to get on their server for everything

I'm using a holux and I have no issues. I use it through Xport, however, because this is only one of 4 gps programs!

If someone could turn this google earth thing into actual navigation, that would be amazing!

It looks like one could set up a script or something that would input coordinates directly into Google Earth. The "Fly to" tab search field can accept GPS coordinates in "DDD (decimal degrees) and DMS (using the 37 degrees 3' 43.22" syntax)" such as this "37.7, -122.2".

I haven't the expertise to do this but I'm sure it'd be a piece of cake for someone who does to set up a program to send Google Earth point to point to point.

ya google does point-to-point navigating fairly well, there's no voice feature but who the hell cares. An XML-based navigation front end seems fairly feasible, although I don't know squat about xml or programming so I may be wrong.

I'm using it through my cell phone now on a GPRS EDGE network (through bluetooth), and its plenty fast enough. If I'm going slower than 60 kms it redraws clear maps as I drive. I wish I could see how much of the cache I'm using up, and/or a way to see how much 'clear image' I have.

This should be a #1 topic!

Now that some time has passed, has anyone come up with any better preferences to how GE behaves regarding update frequency, fly to speed, etc. I haven't really messed with them since setting it up on the original post.

My main gripe is that I don't like the altitude it sticks to, right around 70' above ground level. I've been looking but I haven't found any way to change that. I'd actually like it a little higher than that, maybe 150' or 300'.
