GPSlim 236 Problems

Ok gusy so i finally completed my install today well for the most part. I booted the pc in the car everything loaded and was great. My GPS worked and everything. But then i shut down the PC, my sister came home and she wanted to see it so i started up and Next thing you know My GPSlim 236 becane an unknown device. There was a message saying that this device has malfunctioned and blah blah blah. But now when i plug the gps in i get no more unknown devices and it doesnt even acknowledge that i plugged it it. It is a usb connection. But all the light are working on the gps even the green light. But i get i was getting an unknow device but now i get nothing... i have no clue what the problem is. I dont understand why it was working fine when ui was conguring everything in my house and the first time i started the pc in the car. I dont know if it mite be the usb cable or what. But I tried plugging it into my friends comp and it didnt recognizr it as well, Can the usb cable just go bad like that? Can i pick up one of these usb cable at a local store??

I would try to:

1. Unplug it from your PC
2. Start > Settings > Control Pannel > System > Device Manager
3. Look up the GPS receiver under "Ports"
4. Right-click it > select Uninstall
5. Restart PC
6. (do NOT plug the GPS yet)
7. Insert the CD that came with your GPSlim236
8. Install the driver software
9. Plug it in now
10. If still no luck, plug it to another USB port

The cable is really not just a cable, but it is a USB/Serial adapter, so you cannot use an ordinarry cable which has USB connector on one side and mini-USB on the other.

But see here is the thing, it is not even listen under ports i already did that....I gotta go get the cd and try that. I downloaded the drivers from holux's website:
http://www.holux.com.tw/Temp%20web/d...ta.html#GR-230 But it is just an .exe. I dont know if those are the exact drivers. But hopefully the cd will work!

I had this device, but gave it up for garmin. The usb cable that comes with the package is not for data. it is just for charging. you have to get the special usb cable if you want to connect it through usb, otherwise use bluetooth.

"Together with the usual multi-country charger cable system and the ability to charge the battery from three different sources, this GPS continues its predeccesors success. Don't forget that this GPS can still be connected via both Bluetooth and a wired cable (available separately) simultaeneously."

Hope this helps

The cable I am using at the moment is the one provided by HOLUX, but it doesnt seem to work when connecting to any computer anymore so i ordered a new cable.

I checked the link you provided, buy it didn't work. I found a driver (also exe) here: http://www.holux.com.tw/Temp%20web/download-data.html and I ran it on my home PC. It works. Try it to see what happens ;-)

The (correct) cable desn't come in standard package. It is an optional cable which has to be ordered extra. It is about $19.

The cable which is included with the standard package indeed will not work for your intended purpose. It is only good for charging (via USB).

(...but you have said it worked for a while... so I'm confused what cable you really have...)
