If you go to NY the worst place for signal is in the Financial district (Wall street) Midtown is not so bad but around Madison Avenue and that should give you the best testing conditions.

Thanks MobitekLink, I will definitely be testing it! the good part is that my plans changed a bit so I will be going to NY on Tuesday and stay for 6 days so this is a great opportunity for testing! I am sure my girlfriend will not be so happy about it... driving around just to test my GPS... shopping is her priority ! lol

Well I'm back from NY. I got a chance to test the GPS and for the most part I got very good results. For navigation it works VERY well. I was in DR mode for most of my driving in Manhattan an it performed very good. I used MapMonky (Destinator) and CoPilot, both worked well.
I logged data with U center but haven't yet processed it. I want to compare them with an actual map but I haven't had the time to figure out how to do it yet. if anyone has a map of NY that I could use in U-center I would really appreciate it! Now the bad part. Initially I used it without a backup battery so it had to lock on satellites initially to start tracking with DR, otherwise it had no idea where I was, but in Manhattan it's not always easy to do so.
Then I installed the battery but to my surprise every time I turned the car and computer on, my position was a bit off, usually a few miles wrong! Using U center to monitor the GPS output I figured out that after I turn off the ignition the speed input from the car changes erratically! So for the 90 seconds that it takes my power supply to turn off after my ignition is off, my position would change a lot due to this problem. I thought of two solutions. first I could power the GPS from the ACC line so when ignition is off so is the GPS so change in the position. Or I could use a relay to disconnect the speed input so I would still have the GPS connected to the computer. Say you stop for gas, you don't want your Nav program loosing gps connection. But then again it's not such a big deal is it? I think I'll go with the first idea.
One more problem I encountered is that the Ublox has some incompatibility issues with Goops. For those that don't know what Goops is go here:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/user-innovations/68799-goops-google-earth-gps-tracking-navigation-new-gpsgate-mologogo-tracking.html
so I could not test the input directly to a Google Earth map... That would give me a very good sense of how accurate DR is. Here in Boston when my GPS has a good lock I'm almost always on the right position on Google Earth. ON the road and usually on the correct side too! so the maps are accurate for Boston at least. I heard some people complain that for there place GE was a bit off. When I get the time I will run it on GE with DR to test it.
Well that is all for now! Sorry for the long post...

Hi Spaceskater,
I would be interested in any problems your having using GooPs with Ublox. Let me know if I can help.
Thanks and keep up the good work.

I belive my original incar navigation system that came with my Car does have a DR GPS.
Does anyone know if the GPS module included inside a TravelPilot RGN08 is usable on a PC? Everything is soldered in so I cant just remove it.
I replaced my Travelpilot indash screen with a 7" lilliput, and the nav unit with a MiniITX, so I could just shop up the Navigation unit to remove the GPS.

Hope it cost less than the uBlox demo kit... 1199€ is more than I would pay if I got 10 kits....
