Are there any crossover GPS models that would work well in both a car environment, and a waterproof handheld?

I intend on getting a handheld that needs to be waterproof and will tell me logged speeds, and I think some even have depth meters which would be very useful for me.

Small would be nice, as it will be used on a seadoo for speed testing purposes.
I would also hope that it would be fully functional as a feed for any GPS applications that are available for the car environment if this is possible.

Does anyone have suggestions for a unit that would meet most of these requirements, or give other features that would be a good compromise?

How much waterproofing do you need? The Garmin Quest and Quest II are waterproof.

Waterproof: IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 mins.)

I don’t plan on keeping it anywhere where it will get dunked while in use, but I guess preparing for the worse is the route to go. A lot of jetski guys seem to be using them successfully, and some models even come with facilities for them built into the hull. So they are fairly common place in the sport, so they must hold up fairly well in that environment.

I would ask the jetski crowd which models to go with, but I am assuming >99% of them have never even heard of the term carputor let alone know specifics about models as most here do.

I know of a few units the jetski crowd likes, but I am completely unfamiliar with the useful capabilities I need if I am to adapt it back and forth from a car atmosphere to a marine environment.

The watersport crowd likes the Garmin eTrex series specifically the Legend and the Magellan Meridian Color seems somewhat popular.

Will most or any of the common waterproof units be able to port to a computer to feed data, allowing the use of commonly used software here?
What should I be looking for that will tell me it will be compatible to use in this way?

Will I be able to use a single unit for duel purpose, or do I have to go with individual units?

get the br 355 it has changeable ends so you can use it with your handheld and buy the serial or usb connector and use it with your laptop

I am not sure how this would work?
This is just a receiver correct?
I need a independent source or a stand alone unit I think.

I just need to know which handheld units would be capable of porting to a computer as if it were just a receiver.

Is this possible? I cannot find anything specifically telling me that I can do this with the handheld models that have been recommended for use in a marine environment.

Am I using incorrect terminology to describe what I am trying to do?

I see a lot of the models say Interfaces with USB, RS232 , but I think this is for uploading maps and POI over USB and serial correct?

What do I need to know to find out if one of these units are capable of sending usable data over the line to feed into software applications?

Does anyone know if any models are capable of this?

It seems odd to me there wouldn’t be a unit that was made that would port the data to a computer as a basic receiver, but have self contained capabilities as well.

Here is a GPS Logger that would do what you are asking. It isn't waterproof but it is fully self contained and could be put inside a plastic enclosure. Mine works from inside the trunk of my car. You would also need a PC or pocket PC if you want to use this for real time tracking. For logging to seadoo speeds, just read it back later at the dock.

a Magellan GPS 315 will work fine, I have one and used it with IGuidance. I don't want it anymore, if you're interested

He said he wants to do speed tests on his seadoo. The logging would provide the speed if properly set up. I doubt that he would be trying to read the thing while attempting to break his old speed records. I suggested it as a compromise like he asked. It is small, about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Uses Bluetooth.
