Problems with Holux 213 USB
I just purchased the Holux GR-213 (USB) since I've read that it's recommended to buy a GPS device with the Sirfstar III chipset. However, I've been having some problems with it. If I connect the device after it hasn't been used for a while, it works fine. If I unplug it from the USB port, and then try plugging it back in within the next 15 minutes or so, I receive the error on my computer:
"USB Device Not Recognized -
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. - Try
reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it,
replace the device."
If I used the device then unplugged it, I won't be able to get the device working again unless I leave it unplugged for around 15 minutes or so. I have the same problem even if I try using the device on another computer soon after I unplugged it. I've also tried restarting the computer and reinstalling drivers.
I'm only testing this in my home, not in a car with strange power supplies or anything. I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks.

Also, I've tried using SiRFdemo to reset it to factory defaults. I still have the same problem.

Does anyone that has the GR-213 have any comments? When e-mailing the place that sold it to me, they claim that this is the standard functionality? That's pretty horrible if this is true. I receive this problem if I plug the device into my laptop (it'd work this time), unplug it, and then plug it back in (I'd get USB Error). I'd keep getting that USB error for the next 15 minutes or so if I plug the GPS into ANY computer. This would be extremely annoying since I may be in a situation where I need the GPS to work, but it won't work. Does this happen to anyone else?

I have a Holux GM-210, and honestly, this is what I've come to expect. Multiple computers, same functionality. Only grabs satellites when it feels like it, and sometimes decides to not power on. Some people love them, seems kind of hit or miss.

my first one I had loads of probelms with. It was the straight Holux 213 whre you connected the adapter to a male ps2 port and you could have serial adapter, pda or usb. in order for that one to work i had to set the baud rate really high.
sent it back and got the holux 213u which is a straigt usb cable. works great. really fast and accurate.

I have the Holux 213U, works great with Iguidance, but I'm having serious problems getting it to work with mapmonkey and destinator, Get the gps not found message all the time, been trying to getit to work for weeks now. I can get signals and find satelites in Mapmonkey now for like 2-3 minutes but then I get gps not found again. If anyone knows a solution I would be thankful!

Ok, I just got a new one from an exchange, and the new one works fine. Kind of sad that my first one was defective. I had to pay to ship it back. I hope it doesn't break.

Directly. Same thing happens with a hub though.

Ditto. I received my Holux 213 USB (not the PS/2 one) today and it's working like a champ so far. I have the receiver hanging out the window of my room and I'm getting 7 locked satellites with good strength on all of them.
Works great in Streets and Trips... have yet to try other apps.

I just got mine in the mail today. 213U
Have an issue. Can not ever see it on whatever COM port it is on. PnP detects and installs it. I run the GPS Viewer at baud 4800 and nothing. Never detected. I see it installed in Device Manager and I have tried changing COM ports, baud, nothing. Just sits there with the amber light constant and never shown in the GPSViewer tool utility.
Does anyone have any feedback? Bad item? My stupidity?

Got mine 2 days ago and it works fine...
Did you install the driver that came with the device?
How is it listed in your Device Manager?
Mine is listed as "Holux GPS USB Device(COM#)"
At first it was listed as another device.
Finally, I never got that GPSViewer thing to work. It just froze up.
Instead I installed Roadnav and drove around with my laptop. It works quite well.

Thx for the reply. I think it was just my stupidity.
I emailed the company I got it from and they sent me a detailed instruction sheet for installing it. One thign I had not done was wait about 15 minutes while the antenna initialized. I set it in the car over lunch connected to a laptop and when I got back afterwards, everything is a go. Not sure if that wass the initial issue, but its all working now.
Went for a test drive with it and it works REALLY well!
