GPS Speed signal

Hello, I am a design student in the UK and need to get information on creating a speed signal for a device I am designing. I have read up that snoopers and similar devices have this feature installed, but i need to know which bits are required to have a standalone GPS speedometer. and also some indication as to cost.

The speed signal does not have to be GPS, but i am unsure of other ways in which it can be done wirelessly (no need to install) and as cheap as possible.

Any information or help will be gratefully recieved.

Cheers
