Roadnav, a second look

There are several threads on this forum talking about Roadnav, there was a recent update to the program from this month. I just wanted to post this to bring it back to everyones attention so that maybe it'll start to become a bit more popular.

For those of you who do not know what it is

http://roadnav.sourceforge.net/index.php

Free open source in-car gps software.

Has all the cool toys you could want for your gps. And since it is open source it can and should be easily adapted into the popular front ends we have here at mp3car.com.

It works on many different operating systems too!

so [slothvoice] hey you guys! [/slothvoice] get to the downloading and the installing. If you start to see how great it is and can be, maybe we can get these front end coders to bring it in line with their next releases.

FREE GPS NAV FOR ALL!!

Roadnav looks like it has a lot of promises. If it could overlay the maps on top of satellite images (download from terraserver) like USAPhotoMaps, that would be cool.

Er, just tried it out. Gave me a bunch of error messages while downloading maps. Then hogged all the CPU while tracking my GPS position for no reason at all. Seems like a poorly written app.

The errors in downloading the maps are not the progams fault. Seems the site where the link goes is not behaving itself http://geonames.usgs.gov/ I selected all of california and only a few would download. The rest were errors.

Edit and update: It errored for about the first 20 maps but then it downloaded a bunch. Been downloading and updating the map for about 30 minutes now. I don't have my gps mouse hooked up to this computer but I will try it tomorrow when I do.

here is the site and then it looks for /state.zip
http://geonames.usgs.gov/geonames/stategaz/

and mpfjr is correct when you click on the zip file it pops with page coannot be found so that is the websites fault.

It needs work no doubt, but has potential esp. with all the smart people that can program on this board.

I can live with the errors. It's the ungraceful error handling part that turns me off. I had to sit through and click away about 30 error messages. The biggest problem is stil the CPU usage.
