Thanks for your help...I have been trying to figure it out. I really do not know how to "cache" and how with only a gps signal (no internet) to get gps satellite photos.

When I downloaded the free version of GoogleEarth I couldn't figure out how to activate my gps locater. IF YOU WONT ANSWER MY OTHER QUESTIONS WILL YOU ANSWER THIS ONE?

I'll answer it... SEARCH!

There has been much discussion on this board about caching Google Earth so you don't need internet as well as ways to get cheap ($6/mo) internet in the car!

Google Earth doesn't support live GPS. That's why CommTest2 was created (as well as GooPs, nemaGE, and EarthBridge... all of which have been discussed all over this board).

To use commtest2, will I need to download the $20 google earth version, or will the free one work?

Talking CommTest2 (build 10038) available

Very solid build. If you’ve been keeping up with the constant ongoing improvements of CommTest2 you would have noticed that new features are being added continuously and with each new feature the potential for a new bug occurs. I'm glad to say that build 10038 is very stable and should work fine. If ever a new release does not satisfy you, you may fall back to build 10038.

CommTest2 Download Link: http://briefnotion.250free.com/

0.3.5.1 (July 24, 2006)
  • Improved screen release and window release handling.
  • Updated the help page text.

0.3.5.0 (July 23, 2006)
  • Satellite Signal Loss announcement created.
  • Fixed writing NMEA logs to clear buffered data.
  • Corrected some of the code.

Even more stable. Seems that build 10038 still contained an error that didn't allow the signal loss timer to be set. I'm republish the compile and brought the build number to "build 2000".

A custom set of icons to replace the ones built into GE can be used. The three types of configurable icons are Start/Stop, Information, and Current position. Also, The current position icon will now rotate in the direction of travel.

I don’t have any icons to upload though. If anyone has a good set, then they are welcomed to post them in the forum.

0.3.6.0 (July 27, 2006)
  • Ability to change the Current position icon, Start stop icon, and Information Icon, added.
  • The current position icon can be configured to point in the direction of travel.
  • New Variable: %signalloss% (Signal Loss Indicator)

I didn’t really have a use for this feature. Wanted to see how it would turn out. How about you?

0.3.7.0 (August 4, 2006)
  • A Window Transparency has been added. When on the window border and background will disappear. The hotkey is "T".
  • An Auto Window Transparency has been added to the Settings screen. When on the window border and background will disappear when connected then reappear when disconnected.

Well, I suppose I should give some credit where credit is due.

I referred to these sites to build CommTest2:

http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/LatLong.html - Formulas to calculate distance.

http://web.295.ca/~gpz550/GEtrax/ - First introduction to NMEA to to KML.

http://www.getpaint.net/ - Super cool paint program - My prize cache is located in the picture, in another country that I cant see. Best guess at coordinates are is in the square area. I made a couple of unpublished icons.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/ - Sleek and powerful program developer.

I almost forgot: Google earth http://earth.google.com/

Hopefully the program will not lock up when disconnecting anymore. I'm not sure why this is happening but I think it may have to do with the extra thread the port creates and a timing problem that occurs during heavy processing while closing out the connection. In other words, the program forgets about the port when its thinking about too many things.

This error has just recently become a problem that I think may have held back, at least untill I figure out what happening. I reduced the CPU load when disconnecting to make things run smoother.

0.3.8.2 (August 10, 2006)
  • Worked on eliminating the serial port lock up that would occur when disconnecting. I haven't isolated this bug. The serial port seems to hang when closing with a heavy system CPU load.

0.3.8.1 (August 9, 2006)
  • Implementing another method of the Two Kml Files problem after noticing a situation where the previous method would fail.

0.3.8.0 (August 8, 2006)
  • Improved KML formatting.
  • Put code to deter opening two kml files at the same time, namely the link and the track.
  • Improved accuracy of generated track.
  • Stopped generating the "LookAt" fields for completed tracks and POI's.

Here is a pic with heading icons.

Here is a pic with heading icons. I'll upload the icons some other time. Right now, the little birdie on the window seal is saying he wants a compass. OK little birdie. I know how.
