That is doable, I do it with a program call copy2000 in FP (cus app and GPS menu aren't in the skin folder so it use one set gloabally for all skins.
The program works making a backup of any folder to a specific time.

MGD, how did you get rid of the text on the Menu button? I replaced the button but the text still shows up.
Also, one thing i noticed while doing this, since im using a very dark background, there are places where the text color is also black making it very hard to see, anyone know how to change the text color in dialogs?
thanks
To delete the "menu" text go to string table, resource # 377 and edit line 6030 from "menu" to "" (basically delete the menu word and live the "")

Looking forward to your modifications guys.
Maybe I am old school, cause I am still using the Brushed Metal (black) skin in RR. Obviously, IG doesn't "match" the skin very well, however, with either of the changes posted, the black will look perfect with my skin.
Just hope I don't end up changing to something a little more cheery in the future, I really like the dark color.
Keep up the great work, and please, please, please, share.
Michael

cool, thanks.
One thing ive been looking at and compareing is the laptop IG vs UMPC IG
side by side you can easily see that basicly the only thing they did was make everything exactly 2x the size(includeing the road lines) and added a few extra shortcut keys for the umpc version. While editing all the bitmaps in the umpc version, i can also see some one was a tad bit lazy because some of the images are not in there native resolution, ie; they resized some of the elements and resaved cuz i can see the poor resolution on some of the items.
Im not sure if i like everything being 2x the size, some things are good being bigger (UI dialogs etc) but the map data looks very messy with everything so huge. I was very comfortable with the way the maps already were being drawn. The umpc version is very close to breaking eveything and almost unuseable, still not sure till i get in the car. But on my desktop embed in my skin, the arrow icon is so close to the bottom of the screen it damn near is not even there, there should be some kind of code that makes sure you are allways centered on the map no matter what.
One thing im considering doing is takeing the laptop version of IG3 and replaceing all the dialogs with the umpc version and bitmaps. What this would give us is the laptop version with map element sizes similar to IG2.x but with the bigger UI elemnts (dialogs) of umpc version. Ive allready replaced every image in the umpc version so i just have to do it twice, along with the dialog code.
I swear, despite what others have said here, i really dont think they are listening as closely as they should to what a carpc users needs are. If they were i dont think there would be so many people allready hacking it up again to use in the car. Its like they understand there is a market here (or rather umpc market) but when it came time to implement the ideas someone dropped the ball and cut some corners along the way.
Which beggs me to ask, so what are the new features? I mean, sure the UI is a lot more car friendly, but if i have to go in and replace every image by hand myself, hell i had to do that with the old version so that feature really isnt anything new. maybe to them, but not us. I like the speedo/eta box being split apart and on the bottom, now its actually useable but geez its to freaking big.
What they should of really did is had someone go and buy a touchscreen, hook it up to there PC and install some of the frontends here and set it up the same way we set it up here, then and only then start making changes. Otherwise your flying blind and it shows. Im pretty sure they have a umpc device exactly for this purpose, and automaticly assumed that this would suit our needs also.
Close but no cigar!
Hell im not sure i would even want to run the umpc version on a umpc if i had one. Since the device would be held a lot closer to my face than say my carputers screen, i dont think you would have to make all the map elements 2x the size, just the UI controls so i can click on them. Leave everything else alone.
but you know what they say if you want something done right, do it your self. Unfortunately that maxes out at using reshacker. I still think IG3 is good and likey will be moving my install to the car, and i hope we get a patch soon that addresses some of these issues and the even more critical ones like removing keyboard support for some items and street names jumping.
so in the end what ill have is both the versions modded, since the umpc version is done already. Then people can pick which version they want to use.
sorry for the long rant

liquid smoke has it right.... the map vector data is scaled 2x, which is POINTLESS in my opinion.
Be careful if you plan to hack PC version as planned... there are some buttons boundaries that are hardcoded, such as the mute button, etc. Putting a bigger image wont make the touchable area bigger. But MOST of the buttons areas are defined by the image size, so you are probably 99% there if you go that route...

yeah, im just gonna do it the same way i did the 2.x versions and remove all the buttons from the map area. Then copy and past all the dialogs from the umpc version. Replace the bitmaps for the menus/dialogs and call it a day.
Hopefully ill have a nice hybrid version.
One thing that erks me about them scaleing the map data, is if they were going to do that, then they should of stuck the street names inside / on the road (see googe maps for example) instead of next them, hanging off the side of them, and other weird places.

Two goofs:
1. In the "3.wav" sound clip, the girl breathes on the mike when saying "Three".
2. iGuidance v3, non-reshacked, using white color at night, 3D mode 1:

I always found that to be a tad annoying.

Not too long at all. It was actually a very good summary of how many users feel about the changes in the new iG 3.0.
Also I feel the PC version is likely more appropriate even for UMPC's. The map "size" should have stayed as it was. The areas displaying next-street-name, current-street, and ETA/Dest/Rem/Speed are humongous. The intention to increase the size there was nice, but they over did it a bit.
IMHO I think what is good in the area of size for UMPC's is also good for CarPC's, so the above mentioned changes are equally imperfect for both platforms.

re: change exe with skin changes...
Easiest way i can think to do this is to have a folder called UMPC or whatever, in that folder have subfolders named after the skins with an .exe in each subfolder for that particular skin, then have an autoit script that would read the current skin from rr.ini and copy the corresponding exe to the iguidance folder for use. i could whip this up on monday if interested
