Cheap gps system (ubd) (australia)

Ok, If you already have a laptop you're halfway there. simply purchase a nmea compliant gps receiver (i bought a bu-353 usb receiver from www.usglobalsat.com or ebay for 15-20 more) purchase or aquire Ubd city streets v3.0 (has gps support) (approx 60 bucks) install program and you can track your whereabouts in whatever state you're in.

The above mentioned ubd version DOES NOT have street voice guidance (for that you need ubd direct which is about $1100 per state or $2500 nationwide.

Im currently using this setup for courier work in perth and its great. i also have a previous version of ubd installed and running at the same time so i can look for my destination (you cant search streets while the gps is running).

it really is great and cheap. you can add placemarks and it shows a trail of where you've been for the day. i use it for taking shortcuts through neighbourhoods.

so for under 200 aud its really affordable.

if you want to see pictures or video msg me

Ummmm. OK... You're not telling anyone here anything they don't already know.

Granted, I've never heard of the UBD City Streets software. Many of the Ozzie's on these forums are partial to Ozi Explorer, but it's good to know that there are multiple options for down under...

Fair go DPervert, even over a text interface your Texan arrogance pours through.

The guy is sharing how he's using his tech to get from A to B in a way that works for him, not trying to "tell us something we already know"

If I'd have known about the UBD maps I probably wouldnt have impulse bought Garmins nRoute with the GPS I picked up, which hasnt had a maps update in a year now.

The UDB webpage says it's a "Non Routing Product" so this isnt going to calculate routes based on criteria for you. e.g. exclude routes with bridges < 3.4 metres if youre driving a tall truck. and the optional extras seem very highly priced for when you eventually find yourself wanting those things.

For 70 bucks its a good find, I'd like to see some screen scrapes of how you put it to use mate.

The solution that was used was to purchase an off-the-shelf GPS unit, connect it to a laptop. Yeah. It works for him, as well as a lot of other people. I don't see the point of posting that, but whatever.
Good for him. He found a solution.

In my opinion, the significant content of the post is the different softare that most of us haven't heard of.

I would agree

lucas have you tried out the listed integration with OziExplorer and other nav programs? Is there an API of some sort on the DVD?

Also, picsorlying

Talking Hey

I was just as you guys put it showing the way i set up my gps
personally im not gonna waste $1000 on software that i dont really need

I havent actually tried using oziexplorer with the maps but i will and let you know how it goes

when i went on my last adventure i used raster files with oziexplorer and apart from the old imagery, it worked really well.

and heres a shot of me gathering wireless a/p's over the metro area.

http://www.uploadfile.info/uploads/9565b4b191.jpg

using netstumbler to scan locations while driving around and log gps coordinates, i then used earth stumbler and transferred the data from netstumbler and its really cool. im gonna build up a huge list of access points.

(something to keep me occupied)

DarquePervert, the whole idea of forums is to share information, not everyone in australia knows what options they have. if you dont like, who cares.

im simply sharing my idea of what i think is a good, easy system so quit being a knob,

by the way, ubd is very user friendly, oziexplorer has alot more advanced functions.

StayFocusd, i dont think ubd has a API, i would assume the maps are able to be imported to oziexplorer. ( which would come in handy when you come from the bush to a city, you have better quality maps

as far as i can see it doesnt have an api but it does allow you to import their maps into oziexplorer

its quite good. you can still search for street names and stuff like you can with ubd's software.

i suppose you can have alot more flexibility now.

Thanks for the post lucasworthmaste.

Good to see another Perth-ite ! A lot of users on this forum don't know how limited the options for Aussies are. I suspect the UBD option will be the only one with maps less than 6 yrs old.

Thanks for the info.

I tried the net-stumbler / earth-stumbler combination to plot Wi-Fi Access Points but had a lot of problems making it work. Your results look great, I will have to try again.

Speaking of stumbled i've just stumbled onto this thread. How would this work on say a 7" widescreen tft? I run the desktop version at home, and i love it... would be great to get this onto the carpc.

Instead of the Earth Stumbler, try this http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/gps/81448-netstumbler-earthstumbler-google-earth.html

It worked much better for me

Guys how much does support for new GPS units suck in Google Earth? (I even bought Plus to try and get it to work properly, buh bow!) trying to get a Garmin Bluetooth GPS 10 to play nice with it....

Theres a thread on these forums somewhere that has something called coms2test that works much better than the support Google have built into Earth.

Made up a sick little tour of the project I'm on this week if any of you are bored :-P

The program title is CommTest2 and can be found at http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/gps/77830-googleearth-gpsr-tracking.html

Just finished working with another fellow from Aust. Looked at the web site to see what was done with the software. I swear the two of you are just a stones throw away from each other.

Sorry about the no road maps. Its way out of my contol. I hope it gets better for you.

Oh yeah. CommTest2 works in Ozzie land also. Much better that I first anticpated. Took the programs out for a drive last night. GE cached data set is phenom. Amazing what you can do with a notebook and a GPSr. Happy driving is what I always say.

Excellent post - I am just getting my car pc organised at the moment and am still in that crazy research mode (have done ALOT of reading of all these forums over the last 2 weeks)

Can the UBD be integrated nicely with any of the front ends or is that wishful thinking?
