Gps Speed logger

Ok here is the situation.

I am on the pit crew of a stock car race team in Canada. We are racing this weekend at the Champ Car Grand Prix of Edmonton. On friday during practice I would like to stick a laptop in the car with my gps anttena and see how fast we were going on any givin part of the track. Do any of you know what software would record this info so that we could look at it after practice?

I did a couple of searches and didn't find much.

Thank you for any help.

At the very least, you can use gpsgate to record the gps output then replay it back to any gps software. From the playback you could see speed in iguidance, or any free gps monitoring tool.

Not sure of a more ellegant way to do this.

Freedrive has a logging facility, and also a playback feature.

Pretty much everything around here can do it. GPSSecure and whereismygps.net offer some nice web-based displays that will allow your team to view the stats via the net. Just need an Internet connection to upload your log files. No Inet, they'll store the log on your computer until you can upload.

As a general rule of thumb, GPS isn't very accurate in terms of exact speeds and the ability to update fast. For instance, it may show you're doing top speed while in the corner. But it should give you an idea within 15 mph of how fast you're going.

Thank You. I'll look into those

I've been using Streets and trips in my truck but that does not seen to log anything other than a trail.

If you're racing, you may want to take a look at TraqMate. It is basically a data acquisition system for gps, g-meter and OBD. The captured data from a race can be replayed on their viewing software to show laptimes, cornering force, engine parameters, etc.

There are probably others that do this as well. Search on race data acquisition.
